(A/N: Welcome to the Lucky Star Random Word challenge! The basics of this series are simple; I use a random word generator to produce a completely random word, then, provided the word is usable and not simply a chemical or plant, I write a drabble based on that word. The word doesn't need to be used in the drabble, but it must factor in, such as in the theme or tone of the drabble. Without further ado, let us begin!)
1. Adorableness
Miyuki watched with growing fascination as her mother hurried about the kitchen, looking hastily through each cupboard and drawer in search of that which eluded her. Miyuki had no idea what this mysterious item was; she presumed it was related to the dinner Yukari was preparing, though this only further compounded Miyuki confusion, as Yukari had chosen to settle for microwave meals tonight. Rather fortunate, considering that Yukari had all the culinary skill that might be expected of someone who lived their life relying on her family or on takeaways for food. Finally seeming to relent in her search, Yukari turned to where Miyuki was sitting at the kitchen table.
"Miyuki, honey, do you know where my oven mitts went? I can't seem to find them." She said in an exasperated tone. Miyuki was taken aback for a moment, her eyes widening as her mouth formed into an unintentional smile.
"Mother, you won't need mitts to remove food from the microwave!" Miyuki instructed, speaking slowly so as to ensure that Yukari fully understood.
"Safety first, they always say! I want to be prepared." Yukari said with a twinge of pride in her voice. Miyuki could understand her mother's reasoning, but she wanted to tell her that her cation was unnecessary. However, she was interrupted by a loud dinging sound.
"Oh, yours is ready, Yuki-chan!" Yukari said excitedly as she bounded over to the microwave. She flung over the door and pulled the plastic tray out immediately. "Ouch, it's hot! I told you I should've worn some mitts!" Yukari said as she dropped the tray onto the counter and proceeded to wave her hands in the air, attempting to cool them again. Miyuki could not find the words to respond, but found herself smiling at her mother's antics.
"Wow Yuki-chan, yours looks great!" Yukari said happily as she peeled the film from the top of the tray.
"It's just macaroni cheese, mother." Miyuki said simply. Yukari then lifted a finger into the air, and proceeded to plunge it into the cheese. "Mother, what on earth are you doing?!"
"I'm checking the temper-Gah!" Yukari cried out in pain as she pulled her scolded finger out and stuck it in her mouth. "That really hurt!" Yukari cried, her eyes watering. Miyuki rolled her eyes before getting up and leading her mother to the sink, and then running the offended finger under cold water. As she did so, Miyuki looked over at Yukari's face; her lips were slightly pouted, her brows raised and her eyes watering. Despite her mother's, admittedly minor, pain, Miyuki found herself smiling fondly at that adorable look on Yukari's face; it was the visage of an eight year old projected onto a woman in her mid-thirties. It was one of the things about Yukari that endeared her so greatly to her daughter: her childish enthusiasm, her cute expressions and her air-headed nature made her so very charming, in the most adorable way possible.
"Miyuki, aren't you going to eat your dinner?" Miyuki turned around to see Yukari sat at the table with two plates full of food. The tap behind her was switched off and Yukari had apparently recovered from her 'injury'.
"Oh, did I space out again?" Miyuki said in embarrassment as she took her seat. She wondered if, with her own clumsy tendencies, she was really all that different to her mother.
2. Slothful
Nanako's eyes slowly began to open as the early morning sunshine fell upon her face. It took several moments for her brain to fully take note that it was awake, and once it had Nanako was hit by a sudden, wonderful thought.
"It's...Saturday." She thought to herself. Nanako began to crack a smile at the prospect of a day off, when she recalled another, far less pleasant thought. "I've got housework to do…" Cleaning chores of all kinds awaited Nanako once she left the comfort of her bed. She weighed her options, and ultimately came to the conclusion that there was only one viable course of action. She reluctantly dragged herself out of bed, dressed only in the white t-shirt and black shorts she slept in, and made her way through her apartment and into the kitchen. Once there, she made herself some coffee. With a caffeinated drink in one hand, Nanako made her way back to her room, switched on the television, and sat down in her bed, the duvet pulled up to her midriff. Thus Nanako resolved to while away the hours doing precisely nothing.
A few hours later, Nanako began to fidget. "I think I need a change of pace." She said to herself as she climbed out of bed and returned to the kitchen. She added the coffee cup to the growing pile of plates, cups and cutlery that had yet to be washed up. After that she opened the fridge and grabbed a bottle of beer from inside. She cracked it open and returned to her place in bed. As she sat down, Nanako had a sudden realization; she had so many chores because every weekend she lazed around, just like today. Nanako resolved that tomorrow she would work on her chores and get them out of the way.
She never did do anything productive on Sunday, either.
3. Jaunty
Minami walked awkwardly through to the lounge of the Izumi house, arms drawn close to herself as though they were her protection from this unfamiliar place. Besides Miyuki, Minami had never visited a friend's house before, so this impromptu visit to Yutaka's home was a completely new experience for her.
"You can sit wherever you'd like Minami-chan! I'll go and get some drinks." With that, Yutaka disappeared in the direction of what Minami assumed was the kitchen. She took in her surroundings; a fairly spacious, sparsely decorated living room, very typical for a Japanese house on the outskirts of the city. Shuffling nervously over to the sofa in the middle of the room, Minami took a seat, stiffly half-sitting on the cushion with her hands bunched up in her lap and her eyes on the floor.
"Oh, hey, I didn't know we'd be getting visitors today." Minami heard a man's voice from the doorway on the far side of the room. She bolted straight up immediately and turned to look at him. The man looked to be in his early forties with short blue hair and striking green eyes. He was dressed in very casual clothes, the kind of outfit most only wore during the evening.
"Sorry, sir! I'm Iwasaki; Kobayakawa-san invited me in, sir..." Minami said quickly, though her voice remained soft and quiet. She followed with a bow, being as polite as possible.
"Iwasaki, huh?" The man rubbed his stubbled chin in thought. "Ah, you must be Minami, the girl Yutaka's always talking about!" Minami felt embarrassed at the thought of being the subject of someone else's conversation.
"Yes, I'm sorry to impose, sir." Minami bowed again.
"It's just Sojiro to you, kiddo. Any friend of Yu-chan's a friend of mine." Sojiro walked over and held out his hand. Minami stared for a moment before reaching out a hand to take his.
"It's an honour to meet you, Sojiro-san." Minami said politely.
"The pleasure's all mine, but hey…" Sojiro glanced around before leaning in closer. "Try not to wear her out too much, eh?" He said with a wink and a sly smile. Minami was confused for a moment, before her face turned red as she caught on. Sojiro gave a wry laugh as he wandered off towards the kitchen. Shortly thereafter, Yutaka came out with a tray of tea and snacks.
"My uncle said that he spoke to you, Minami-chan!" Yutaka said happily.
"He did." Minami coolly responded.
"Wow! What did you think of my uncle?" Yutaka asked.
"He was, uh...jaunty, I guess you could say." Minami picked up her tea and took a sip, trying to hide the blush making it's way onto her face.
