It had been like any other day. She couldn't understand why something like it could have happened on such an ordinary, sunny day. But it had and there was nothing she could do now. There wasn't anything she could have done then either, so she was trying not to dwell on what ifs.
She remembered the day she had been told the news. She had been on the TARDIS when Mr. Maitland had called. The hospital hadn't been able to get a hold of her so they had contacted Mr. Maitland who had had to break the news to her. In a way, she was glad. Better to be told the news from a friends than from a third party she had told the Doctor as she sobbed into his chest in the middle of the console room. He just held her close as tears ran down his own cheeks.
Now she held his hand as she stood next to her father's grave. She watched as the coffin was slowly lowered into the ground. Her ears were numb to the condolences everybody paid her. She could focus on nothing but the Doctor's hand in her own.
She and the Doctor stayed long after everybody else had left. She stared numbly at the fresh mound of dirt in front of them. The Doctor watched her as tears that had refused to fall during the funeral ran down her cheeks. After a few moments, she turned and buried herself in his chest. The Doctor held her and kissed her hair as she cried. This wasn't the first time she had cried and he was sure it wouldn't be the last. He gently steered her toward the TARDIS.
He sat down in the chair in the console room and held her in his lap. He kissed her hair and just held her. She had gotten through pain like this before. It would be hard, but he was sure she would be able to get through it. Besides, this time she had him.
