Her muscles burned. She desperately drew air into her lungs. Her heart hammered against her chest causing her pulse to beat loudly in her ears. She had been running all night, and though she was beyond exhausted, adrenalin still flowed through her veins. She was the only one left, the last one still free. And then, near the end of the game, he had finally caught her.
They were on the floor; she couldn't quite remember how they got there. She panted, trying to catch her breath as she lay beneath him, her body tense though she made no move to escape. His face was buried in her neck, his own breath just as ragged. Arms wrapped around her smaller frame, his weight set firmly atop her without crushing. He had put forth a lot of effort that night, and now at last, he had her.
"Light is approaching." She breathed quietly, eyes half lidded as she gazed out over his shoulder. His arms tightened around her, strong and sturdy, pulling her closer against a hard body. Protective. Possessive.
"Then surrender to the dark." He commanded in a whisper, breath ghosting over her ear. She could almost imagine hearing an undertone of pleading to his words.
There was a long silence as they lay there. The night was almost over. Could she escape and evade him till then, she wondered. If she lasted to the end, then she would win. But there was still too much time left, and she was so tired. And, though she was reluctant to admit it, being in his arms was rather comfortable.
She heaved a heavy sigh, all the tension leaving her body in resignation. Her eyes fell closed as she lifted her arms, enclosing him in a gentle embrace, hands gripping at the fabric of his shirt. He in turn, relaxed around her, though his grip remained secure. He lifted his head, brushing his lips tenderly across her own, the corner of her mouth, her cheek, and finally just under her ear.
"I love you." He murmured reverently. Triumphantly.
She sighed again and tilted her head, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to his jaw. "I love you too."
He had won.
