"Just leave me alone, Sirius, I don't want to listen to you!" yelled James, bursting through the portrait hole angrily and striding towards the stairs. Every head in the room turned to look at the disturbance before they marched up to their dormitory. A loud slam was heard to the people in the common room and they went back to their business, disappointed that they wouldn't find out the cause of the argument.

"James, please! I wasn't thinking! I'm sorry!" cried Sirius, following close at his heels into the room. James whirled round suddenly, and Sirius almost walked into him.

"It's not me that you have to apologise to!"

Sirius went even paler than he already was and sat down on the nearest bed (James') shakily.

"How could you Sirius? You promised! We all swore on it! What happened to loyalty to your friends? Some Gryffindor you are." James carried on bitterly.

"I never meant to hurt him..." Sirius said quietly. "I never would - I wasn't...I didn't...I didn't think about what it would do to Remus."

"Yeah, you're right! You didn't think! You never do, do you? Maybe it's time that you did, Sirius. Maybe it's time you grew up a little. You could have destroyed everything! And you're going to tell him tomorrow, as soon as you see him-and I'm not getting you out of this one. And neither is Pete."

"He's going to hate me James." Sirius' voice was smaller than James had ever heard it. He felt a swell of pity surge inside his chest.

"You're a fucking idiot." James stated, lowering himself next to Sirius. He wasn't shouting anymore. Sirius dropped his head into his hands. "Do you know what the worst part is?"

Sirius remained silent, so James digressed.

"The worst part is that he won't hate you. He'll forgive you like that-" he snapped his fingers. "and that'll be the end of it. Because that's who he is - he doesn't want to do anything that might make him lose his friend, even though it was your fault. If it were me ... I'd punch you in your stupid face, and believe me I'm still thinking about it now."

He took a deep breath. "As soon as the sun comes up tomorrow, you're going to the hospital wing and waiting for him to wake up."

Sirius nodded.

"And I'm going to go now, because I don't want to start feeling sorry for you when it's your own fault. He'd better be ok or..."

James got up and left the room, his sentence unfinished, and his face grim. Sirius' whole body shuddered as he thought of what Remus would be doing to himself right now. He rubbed his hands over his face, wiping away the wetness around his eyes. In his head rang the words that Snape had spat at him as they left Dumbledore's office.

"I don't know why you always act like you're so above your family. Once a Black, always a Black. You fit in perfectly," he had hissed, his mouth turned up in a nasty sneer. And for once, Sirius couldn't say that Snape was wrong.
