Yonder

She was 29. Maybe it was still young for others, or already old for some. She was one of the most powerful women in her generation.

An inspiration, they referred to her.

The respected and well-loved Chief Representative of Orb, was the description that made her smile.

The princess of Orb, was the title that would still make her cringe.

But she was just still Cagalli.

-shshshsh-

As a public figure, news or gossips about her life, personal or not, were one of the favorite topics not only of citizens of Orb, but other Naturals and Coordinators alike.

For years, most questions were about the representative's love life.

Why had she not settled down yet? Who was or is her boyfriend? What was she looking for a guy anyway?

Her answer to these questions was simple. Orb is my life.

Some people looked up to her more, because of that. Some felt sad for her, for they thought that she was living a lonely life.

But she was happy serving her beloved land. She wanted to make sure that peace would continue to reign. She didn't want any more people losing loved ones just because of useless wars or misunderstandings. She took it upon herself to make sure that the world would be a better and happier place to live in, just like what Athrun had been doing for the past years as the Chairman of Plants.

But if Cagalli was also leading and serving Orb to uphold her father's ideals; Athrun was also leading and serving Plants to atone for his father's sins.

She was a woman who couldn't belong to a single man…for she belonged to Orb. Athrun very much understood this as he was in the same position.

Athrun and Cagalli had tried to save what's left of their relationship some years ago; but the distance and their responsibilities placed a huge wall between them. They belonged to different worlds.

They tried dating other people then.

Cagalli just found herself subconsciously comparing them to a person with blue-hair and emerald eyes.

Athrun noted that he still preferred the fiery blonde over any other woman.

In the end, they remained single and very much married to their duties.

Cagalli turned off the television when Athrun's interview was finished. She decided to drown herself with work, instead of sleeping as she was supposed to.

There were still times when she would think of him and wondered whether he would think of her too.

She loved him and knew that she would never love another man. Finding someone to love didn't necessarily mean that you'd be able to stay with the said person forever. It was a harsh reality of life.

-shshshsh-

Athrun held the ring that he once gave to Cagalli. Holding the ring before he started the day, somehow became a habit.

She had returned it a long time ago and told him to give it to the woman he would love. He in turn returned the Haumea necklace she had given him.

He never found another woman to love.

The hardest battle was to keep on living. She once told him. But he realized that the statement was incomplete.

The hardest battle was to keep on living without you.

-shshshsh-

Once upon a time, they found love. But life had not been very kind.

They had both dedicated their lives to their duties for the greater good.

From a distance, they continued to silently love each other.

Perhaps in another lifetime...no barrier would exist.

AN: Yeah, I can also imagine Cagalli remaining single.
