The blonde held out a black mass of material, his cerulean eyes staring into Matt's emerald ones – his eyes free of his goggles for once. "Take it, Matt. Do me this one last favor." he said softly, still holding out the material.

"I can't, Mells." he sighed, shaking his head slowly. He refused to take the vest, even though he could see the tendons flexing and the muscles straining in his lover's arm from holding it up. "This is a suicide mission. There's only a twenty percent chance that both of us will walk away from this plan alive, and I'm not taking the chance that I walk away without you."

Mello's eyes narrowed slightly and he turned away, opening the car door and throwing the vest over the driver's seat before turning back to look at him. "If you don't wear that vest, I swear I will haunt you for all eternity. Understand?" he growled, lifting his hands up to hold Matt's face between them. "If I die, you are not allowed to follow me to the grave."

The redhead smiled slightly, a hint of sadness flickering in his unguarded emerald eyes. "If you die, I'll hunt down Kira myself and put two dozen bullets in that asshole for killing my lover." he leaned forward and placed a soft, gentle kiss on the blonde's lips before pulling away.

"See you on the other side, Matty." Mello murmured, pulling on his black motorbike helmet as his partner got into his car. The blonde made sure the pair of handcuffs were still tucked in his leather pants beside his gun before starting his motorbike, fixing his eyes on the road ahead of him.

"Sorry, Mells." murmured the redhead, throwing the bulletproof vest into the backseat as he opened the car door. He stepped out, praying to the god he didn't believe in that Mello would be safe. "Wait a minute, wait a minute. Since when were the Japanese allowed to carry such big guns?" he smiled at the men surrounding him as they aimed their guns at him. "Alright, you got me. I'm an accomplice in the kidnapping of Takada. I'm sure you've got a lot of questions to ask me. You won't shoot..."

Bang.

He kept smiling as the the first bullet hit him in the shoulder, forcing him to stumble back a step. His hands had been near his head, slowly inching towards the gun carefully tucked in the collar of his lambswool vest.

Bang.

Bangbangbangbangbangbangbangbangbangbangbangbangba ngbangbangbangbangbangbangbangbangbang.

He lost count of how many bullets hit him. The pain nagged at the edge of his mind but he pushed it away. Was that twenty something bullets? Man, talk about overkill. He thought wryly as he took a drag of the cigarette still held between his lips. Damn, Mello's gonna kill me for this.

The redhead was still smiling softly as the cigarette fell from his lips.
