The Dead Lady

Hakkai sat by the window in the room, watching the rain fall. This didn't go unnoticed by a certain brunette boy. Goku crept back to Sanzo, and stared at the monk for a while before the monk looked up, obviously annoyed.

"What?"

"Hakkai's…frowning. He only frowns like that when…." Goku trailed off. Sanzo scoffed.

"When what?"

"When he thinks of the dead lady." Goku paused. "Who was she? I wanna know more about this dead lady that makes Hakkai frown, but…I don't wanna upset Hakkai."

"Hm? I'm not quite sure. All I know is that Chin Yisou called some girl Hakkai's sister, but the way Hakkai talks, she must have been a lover."

"You mean….Hakkai had a girlfriend?" This comment made Gojyo burst into laughter.

"Basically, saru." Gojyo smiled weakly.

"Hakkai tells you things. Things he doesn't tell us. What was the dead lady like?"

"Well…..I don't know." Gojyo shrugged.

"I thought Hakkai told you all his secrets."

"Not all, saru."

"So you two aren't really that close, huh?" Sanzo nearly smiled. "That's good to know."
"Are you asking if I'm gay, you shit monk!" Gojyo growled. Goku sat down on Gojyo's bed next to him.

"I wanna know why this dead lady makes Hakkai so sad." He looked at the kappa with big golden eyes. "If he's so sad, then she must have been really nice…and pretty."

"Well, I wouldn't know about that, saru. Perhaps….she and Hakkai just had a lot in common."

"She was a neat freak?"

"Perhaps." Gojyo chuckled. "I told you. I don't know. What Hakkai told me about her was that she was someone special to him, and that she was both his lover and his sister."

"There are a few idiots out there who think that way with their lover." Sanzo interjected.

"Perhaps…we should ask him. I mean, we don't really know a lot about this girl." Gojyo suggested.

"But…Hakkai's already sad enough." Goku pouted.

"Do you wanna know or not, monkey?" Gojyo asked.

"Gojyo, what's wrong over here?" Hakkai asked the hanyou, walking over and sitting down on his bed.

"Well….you ask, saru." Gojyo elbowed Goku.

"Uh…what was…the dead lady like, Hakkai?" Goku timidly asked.

"The dead lady….? Oh…you must mean Kanan." Hakkai smiled thoughtfully.

"You're not even sadder, are you?" Goku asked.

"Hm? No…it's all right, Goku." Hakkai leaned back. "Kanan was…well, she had a beautiful smile, and she loved pretty much everything."

"Oh. An optimist, huh?" Gojyo chuckled. "Like you."

"Yes. She also was kind, and was gentle. She was the one who…helped me to smile the first time."

"She helped you smile?"

"At first, since I believed I was smarter than anyone at the orphanage, no one really played with me, so I simply delved into my books, shutting myself up in the library. Kanan simply wouldn't allow that, though, and always pulled me outside for a walk, or some games. After a while, she actually got me to the point where I was ready to be more social and interact with other children." Hakkai smiled.

"Oh. So…you were anti-social when you were a kid." Gojyo chuckled.

"You know, Goku….you really should've just asked right out." Hakkai replied.

"Anti-social, huh? Delving into books and shutting himself up in the library rather than interacting with others? Sounds just like you, Ten."

"Does it really, Kanren?"

"But…a girl named Kanan wouldn't allow it….."

"What are you thinking, Taisho?"

"Just call me Kanan for all it's worth, cause I'm not letting you stay cooped up in this study all day."

"Alright, Taisho! I'm coming! Don't pull my arm off!"
