Jess Mariano put one hand on her forehead and blew out with a sigh. He had a good idea where Rory went--and he knew that she had gotten it all wrong. He had never wanted her to know until the time was right. What she had seen was what seemed obvious and sneaky, and for some reason all he was feeling right now was nervousness and love.
Grabbing his keys off of the dresser, he pulled his coat over to protect him from the bitter wind and got into his car. He let her get as far as she had to give both of them time. Her to blow off steam, him to collect his words together—he had been waiting for the right time, had been meeting an old friend who on the day that Rory saw them together, and the same day that he gained the ring for a perfect proposal.
He had never expected her to see them, hadn't really known that she had known until he had arrived home a few hours later. It had been a mistake to kiss her after finding her sound asleep on the couch. It was obvious that scattered empty Chinese food boxes that she had been eating out of, now sitting on the coffee table were a comfort food to Rory. Something she ate when she had a long tedious day or something just hadn't gone right.
Like the kiss that she had witnessed. It was only on the cheek which may have come out as a totally different way of defining cozy. But it was nothing. Lanie worked at a jewelry shop, and for weeks they had been working together to seeking the perfect ring for the perfect woman, Rory Gilmore.
Turning onto a familiar street, he made his way closer to Stars Hollow. Every word collected into his thoughts, what he was going to say, how he would explain what she had seen. And of course then there was Lorelai, the protective mother. He could only imagine her with a creasing frown, but as he showed her the beautiful diamond ring he was sure she would tilt her head with a twinkle in her eye as if she knew it was the perfect explanation.
Yet somehow in words he would still explain to Rory. Let her know that although some times things just are, and that he didn't want to spend a day without her.
