I said the words quietly, almost afraid to disturb the chilly stillness that felt trapped and isolated within the forest. Winter was not the best time of year for a stroll, and yet there we were, just the two of us. Alone but for the smattering of small animals that had yet to hibernate, hidden somewhere inside the dense foliage.

"I'm going to kill you."

A lesser man would have flinched. Would have been startled. He never was a lesser man. He met my gaze unwavering, left side of his mouth quirking upward, just like I'd known it would. How many times I'd seen that same, cocky expression before, I couldn't say. Too many.

He blinked once, twice, and shoved both hands into his small jacket pockets, preserving warmth. There was no reasoning behind it, just the basic human instinct to conserve whatever body temperature is most preferred at the time. We both knew what was coming. I was hardly the joker.

I'd waited a long time for this. Holding my breath, biting my tongue, repressing the urge. There really was no point prolonging it any longer. Less than ten seconds after those five words had broken the silence, I'd reached inside my own, thick coat and withdrawn the sole purpose of our journey.

Nine months of waiting, and there we were. Just one small movement, one pull of the trigger, and I could walk away, reclaim the life that should have been mine to begin with.

But this man, he was full of surprises, right 'til the end. Moments before what would have been a swift operation, his voice halted my movements.

"Tell them I said hello."

One second faster than I'd been, and there was a loud bang that sounded somewhat like the crack of a whip. The snow was sprayed with a red that wasn't his, and I had the sudden feeling that this was wrong, all wrong, and then I was falling.

He never was a lesser man.
