Chapter 1 – Prologue –

Banished

"NO! Who taught you firebending? You are too weak! It's in the muscle! Now do it right!" With a vicious kick, commander Zhao slammed one of the trainees in his class to the ground. They entire group was made up of 10 twelve-year firebenders. They were running routines with perfect calm and fury out in the dueling grounds. All except, for this one kid. Wincing, he slowly picked himself up. Giving a slight cough, he tasted blood, and grimaced.

"Sir? Why are we fighting this war anyways?" He rasped, slowly picking himself up.

Everyone stopped what they were doing.

Commander Zhao looked disgusted. "How – dare – you!" He accentuated each grunt with fireballs from both fists. The boy had to dodge and flip with all his ability. Sidestepping one, turned, flipped under another – and was floored again by another one of Zhao's kicks.

"You do not disobey orders! Keep up this, this attitude of yours, and you will never, ever fight in our army! Your bending is barely up to scratch! Now, Routine 12, and do – it –RIGHT!"

This all happened a week ago.

Just one week. He thought. One week, and now I'm……I'm banished! For asking questions…stupid questions.

"AHEM!" shouted Zhao. The boy snapped immediately to attention, clearly startled.

"Boy, you are, at the time of dusk, officially BANISHED from the fire nation! Got it? come back, and you will be hunted down! I myself will do it. Ito and I would be happy to. Wouldn't we?" He said, motioning to the Komodo Lizard behind him which gave a particularly aggressive grunt. "Now, take him away," The commander said. "Your ship is heading to the north pole. You will be abandoned there. Guards!" He yelled again. "Bring the brand!" Two fire benders came up, with flaming hands.

This is going to hurt… the boy thought

On the ship, the boy remained, tied to a pole in the center deck. His scar still burned, and hurt him greatly. his ropes were actually steel cord – any fire bending, and he would have

nice new scars on his arms, legs, and torso.

Suddenly, there came a jarring halt. the boy was thrown forward painfully.

"We're here," guard said. Untying the cords, they proceeded to bodily heave the youth off of the side of the ship, where he landed face first In a snowbank. The ship then turned around and sailed away, leaving the boy stranded, without food or water.

His name was Kailen.
