Author's Note: I hope you all enjoy this story. I haven't written any Maximum Ride fanfics for a while, but after reading some of the stories on here I was... slightly disappointed. And so I decided to create a fanfic of my own. Again. :3
Chapter 1: Max's POV
I sighed as my wings unfurled, jumping into the night air and spiraling down towards the lake below our cave. Everyone was sleeping, and we were so hidden it would be nearly impossible to find out where we were without a really strong metal detector. And even then only because of the bombs I knew Iggy and Gazzy had to be hiding.
Dipping lower, I allowed the tips of my fingers to skim across the water's surface, smiling slightly before banking to the right, landing on the grass just at the edge and sitting down. I stared into the water, able to see the reflection of the rocky outcrop that hid our cave from view, just above me, in the water. Ripples chased each other through the image, distorting it, before the surface calmed once more.
"Couldn't sleep?" A voice asked from behind me. I jumped up, mentally cursing myself for not paying more attention, and swung my leg around in a high arch, planning to land a kick in the offenders chest.
"Relax," Fang said, catching my foot. I did so immediately, untensing and shaking my wings out just a bit.
"What's up?" I asked, raising an eyebrow as he let my foot down low enough for me to stay balanced. He shrugged, never a man of words, and looked out at the lake just had I had been a moment before.
"Where are we going Max?" He asked quietly, his black hair hiding his eyes. I shrugged in that leaderish way of mine and grinned. "Where ever they can't find us."
He seemed satisfied by that answer and nodded, glancing over at me. "Go sleep," he insisted, "I'll take watch."
Not in the mood to argue, I nodded, letting my 13 foot wingspan out again. The white feathers shined a soft blue from the reflection of the water, the browns a bit darker. I flashed one last smile at Fang before jumping into the air, surging upwards and into the cave mouth, narrowly avoiding rocks on the way in.
It didn't take long to get to the very back of the cave, where there was so little light it was hard for even me to see.. Finding the warm spot I knew Fang had been sleeping, or pretending to sleep, in I laid down, closing my eyes.
Fang's POV:
I was surprised that, for once, Max didn't argue. Normally she said something about girls being able to keep watch just as good as guys, and sometimes better. But I guess she wasn't in the mood to lose another argument tonight.
Flying up just after she disappeared into the jumble of rocks, I sat down at the opening of the cave, moonlight shining on my face. It was a cold caress, followed by a slight, broken up breeze, that I couldn't help but relish.
Glancing back, I could just barely make out the still form of Max, her body shrouded in darkness along with the rest of the flocks. For a moment, a very brief moment that I will deny if ever commented about, I felt disappointed that I couldn't see her. She was so peaceful when she slept, her face serene. She was never like that during the day. She always had determined look put on for the kids, but loving as well. She was always beautiful, but never serene. When she seemed content, she could pass for a goddess.
Like I said, I'll deny all of it.
