"Don't you know any other songs," He asks, setting the last dish on the drying rack.
There's sudden silence, and he realizes that what he said came out a whole lot cattier than he intended. Since he's come out of the closet all his gay days have become 'bitchy queen' days…
He comes into the living room to watch Perry close the key cover – face in that blank emotionless expression that looks so eerie when he knew how expressive Perry's face can be.
He sits beside Perry on the bench and opens the keyboard again.
"I didn't know you played piano," He asks as an apology, knowing any actual apology will be immediately blown off.
"I don't, obviously," Perry grumbles.
"My mom made me take piano lessons for ten years – I never was very good…"
"I had to walk Paige to and from lessons when we were kids. She hated it too," Perry mutters, and it's only his years of experience in translating Perry-ish that catches the subtle nuance of wistfulness to his voice.
"You didn't take lessons?"
Perry lips pull up in a wry expression and he decides not to pursue the line of questioning any further.
"Let's play."
He grabs Perry's left hand and places it on the keys, and moves the other arm to wrap around his waist (not going to turn down an opportunity to snuggle).
"It's actually a piano four hands, y'know…," He says, placing his hands over the correct keys. "Okay now play."
"What?"
"Just play it," He says playing in the opening notes, nudging Perry with his shoulder.
He goes through the intro a couple times before Perry hesitantly joins in with him, gradually gaining confidence.
JD never thought that Heart and Soul could sound so nice.
