I was sitting on my bed with my guitar and notebook when my phone rang. My heart stopped for a moment, it was his ringtone. I took a deep breath and answered it.
"Hello?"
"Hey Mi." He sounded so happy and excited. I tried to reciprocate.
"Hey Nick. What's up?"
"Not much. I'm back in town and I was wondering if I could see you. If you're not busy."
"You're back in town, like right now?"
"Yeah. Like right now. I'm at my parents house." I smiled.
"Could you come over...now?"
"Like right now?"
"I'm getting the feeling that you're mocking me." He laughed.
"Well maybe I am."
"But really, can you come over?"
"Sure. I'll be there in a few." I sighed as I hung up the phone. I didn't even bother getting dressed. Nick had seen me in my pajamas plenty of times. It was less than five minutes before the doorbell rang. I ran downstairs to answer it. I tried to remain calm as I opened the front door.
"Hey Nick."
"Hey Miley."
"It's been a while."
"It has. So...are you gonna let me in?"
"Right. Right." I was a little more than slightly flustered. I wasn't sure where our relationship stood. Nick and I had never really been good about just being friends.
He followed me inside and looked around. "So...this is your new house?"
"Yeah."
"My parents were right. It's a nice house."
"Thanks." I went and sat down at the kitchen table. He sat down next to me.
"So what have you been up to?"
"Just waiting it out at home I guess. Everything turns crazy again in a few weeks so I'm trying to relax."
"So your idea of relaxing is staying in your pajamas all day?"
"Pretty much, yeah." We both laughed. "That is a pretty general way to relax."
"Yeah." There was no denying the awkward feeling. We just sat at the table and subtly avoided eye contact.
"So, Miley. I don't want to disturb you. What were you doing when I called?"
"That sounds dirty."
"Was it dirty?"
"No. I was just writing."
"Writing what?"
"A song. You wanna hear it?"
"Sure." I took his hand and dragged him up the stairs. I sat down on my bed and he sat next to me.
"This is all I have so far." I picked up my guitar and started playing the song. "And that's where I get stuck." I sat and stared at my notebook. "It's like I lost all my inspiration right in the middle."
"Can I see?"
"Sure." I handed him the notebook. He looked it over.
"This is really good so far." I was all of a sudden aware of how close we were sitting. My heart started racing.
"Thanks." I turned my head and looked at him. It was just like a scene out of a movie. Our noses grazed. I could feel the sparks flying.
"Miley..." I stood up.
"I can't do this, Nick. I have a boyfriend."
"Do what? Nothing happened."
"Nothing happened. Did you not just feel that? Something happened. And you know it." I could feel myself getting angry, though I wasn't exactly sure why.
"It's okay Miley. Why can't we just be friends?"
"Come on. We were never just friends. We were either together, or not talking at all." I turned my back to him. I could feel myself choking up.
"I'm sorry Mi. I knew this was a bad idea. I just needed to see you."
"So where are we now? Are we back to ignoring each other?"
"I guess so."
"Okay."
"I guess I'll be leaving then."
"That would probably be best."
"One last thing."
"What's that?"
"Kiss me. One last time."
"Nick, I can't."
"Please."
"Nick..." He walked over and kissed me. It was the most passionate kiss I'd had in a long time. It left me breathless.
"Goodbye Miley."
"Goodbye Nick."
I don't really think that there was a point to this. It's mostly just the product of me not being able to sleep at 3am. So yeah.
Haha.
