Thunder rolled outside my window as I looked out onto the expansive lawns of Hogwarts Castle and the cold mountains beyond, and I could not help but think of a certain someone. That one person whom I had sworn to hate for eternity, the one person that could make my blood pressure rise to levels that I had previously thought were unattainable. But also the one person that could bring me to my knees, that had such a hold over me that I believed that it was magic of the highest sort, James Potter. But I would never let him know that. Something had changed over the summer. Something was different. He was not that annoying prat that he had been in years past. He seemed like he had actually gained some sense of responsibility, which I would have never believed possible. But he had been nothing but a friend to me in the past several months, especially after we were made Head Boy and Girl. He never skived off on his duties, contrary to which, he even offered to take my spot in meetings and patrol when I was feeling overwhelmed. And even better he hadn't asked me out since the start of summer vacation.

As I continued to gaze out over the lawns, I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. A flash of white mixed in with the sea of green. At first I couldn't make out its shape, but after a few seconds I saw that it was a stag, a brilliant white stag. I had never seen anything like it before. Not at Hogwarts or the in muggle world where I had grown up. It moved gracefully across the lawn with the elegance that only an animal of its beauty could possess. I saw it pause and turn its slender neck to look toward the castle. It stood motionless and as the wind blew, it softly rustled the stag's coat. Even at a distance I could see that it seemed to have a human like quality, its motions and actions not seeming quite right for the normal feral animals that inhabit the Hogwarts grounds. After a few moments, it took up its trek across the field. I continued to watch as it walked toward the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest and disappeared into the brush. This stag seemed to be an omen. Something was coming. There was change in the wind, and like the ever approaching storm, it was hidden beyond the horizon.
