Chapter 1
Link stood there as if struck by lightning. Midna ran up the steps made of light. He looked at the mirror. Cracks were appearing all over it, a soft pink glow spreading through it. It surely couldn't take this. He silently willed it not to break. But the tear Midna had thrown at it was merciless, ignoring Link's silent pleading.
Then, suddenly, it smashed. And in that instant, his heart broke with it. The tinkle of broken glass seemed to spread slowly through his mind, as if time had slowed. "NO!!!" he cried. He looked at the Twilight Princess desperately. She smiled sadly, her eyes brimming with tears. He hated to see those tears in Midna's eyes. He wanted to wipe them away and hold her tight to him. His beloved, the only one he would ever love, slowly disappeared, going into the rock, to the Twilight Realm. She did not burst into the black particles Link had grown so familiar with, but instead slowly dissolved into golden sparkles, her head the last thing to vanish.
Suddenly, Link fell to his knees. The pain was beyond anything he could have imagined. It left a raw, numb void where Midna had been in his life. He couldn't bear it. It felt as if half his soul had been wrenched away along with Midna. He just wanted to escape it all. Link heard an unearthly scream of loss echoing around the Arbiter's Grounds and realized it was his own. That was the last thing he heard before he fell into unconsciousness.
