At The Altar
My fingers drum across the countertop
In my mind's eye
Truly shaking on this day
My fist in a bitter clench
My heart racing in my chest
So fast I fear it will burst
My eyes are searching for yours
In this crowded room of nothing and no one
Slight for the whispers of excitement and dread
Anticipation overtaking the stuffy air
Your presence is recognized
To stiffled gasps and huffs of jealousy
Within the confines of these walls
You watch with amusement
At their reactions and exasperations
That reach ridiculing levels
Bordering on shame and idiocy
I avoid their gazes
In fear of losing my nerve
But then you're at my side
And you intoxicate me
Make me forget my surroundings
As we approach the altar
I feel I can tolerate this
The unsettling butterflies
The accusatory stares
The moods of those around us
Because it's for you
And maybe just maybe
I will find reason in this
In the time we have together
In forever
