Remus Lupin was trained in the art of silence from a young age. Don't talk, don't connect, don't get hurt. That was his motto, his mantra. He obeyed it, and lived his life as well as a silent werewolf child could.
And then he got his Hogwarts letter. His mother had shortly cornered him and said that he had better take advantage of this opportunity Dumbledore had given him, and at least try to make some friends. Father and son shared glances, both knowing he would do just the opposite. Remus nodded though, if only to appease his mother for now.
At school, Remus still obeyed his motto. He was still silent, still didn't connect, still didn't get hurt. But now it was harder. He had three roommates who called themselves the Marauders. In the beginning, they tried to connect with him, but after a half a year of his silent treatment, they finally accepted the fact that unlike most of the school, he wasn't worshipping at their feet to be accepted. So they went on with their lives as if they didn't have another roommate. Which Remus was completely fine with. He didn't need friends. He needed education, and he could achieve that while in silence. So he remained silent.
That was until one day. One day so ordinary to the rest of the world, that if one said something huge, something monumental had happened that day, they would have never remembered it.
But they did.
James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew had just ran up the steps to the dormitories where Remus was reading after a particularly harsh transformation. They were exclaiming about the prank they just pulled which involved somehow getting into the girl's dormitories and putting timed dungbombs under each of the beds.
And then Remus did something so shocking, so unexpected, that the other boys had to turn around to see if they had heard right: he laughed. As soon as he let it slip, Remus draw the curtains around his bed. But it was too late. They all subconsciously knew.
The vow of Silence was over.
