You know that feeling you get when you're told something devastating? How your stomach flips and you feel faint? Well I just experienced it for the first time in my life. My father was dead. Gone. I had just found out, it went a little like this...

It had been a normal day at school, I got detention for talking and we had a test. Nothing out of the ordinary. I was walking home with my best friend Janelle and my best guy friend Dexter. We took the shortcut through the park to Janelle's apartment and went separate ways at the corner. As I approached my house it hit me that I forgot my key. I mentally face-palmed when I noticed something peculiar. My mom's car was in the driveway, but she's never home earlier than five. I turned the doorknob and heard someone crying.
"Sophie? Mom? You alright?" I called out. I walked through the front hall and turned into the kitchen. There I found my mom, sitting in a chair. Now would be a good time to mention that my parents are-sorry, were divorced. She was just sitting there, crying.
"Mom?" I said gently placing a hand on her shoulder. She jumped.
"Elena. You're home. Please sit. "she choked out. I pulled out a chair and sat in it. I looked at her expectantly. My sister, Sophie came bounding down the stairs.
"What's up?"she asked looking at my mom. Then her face fell."Mom what's wrong."
"Girls, I know this may be hard to hear but..."she spoke shakily.
"But what? What happened?"I asked sharply.
"Your father...he was in a crash." And that was all I needed to hear to know what happened. I collapsed on the floor; sprung up out of her chair and knelt over me. She helped me up and set me in the couch. I clutched her. I was no longer crying, I just couldn't cry. She sat next to me and held me. My mom left the room with a glass in her hand, noticed by us.

And that's why I'm where I am right now. I was sitting on steps outside a church full of people mourning my father's passing. Suddenly the door opened and out came Dexter. I looked up at him letting my eyes linger on his for a few seconds before I pulled away. He sat down next to me.
'You alright?'he asked.
"Freaking perfect."I snapped. He flinched.
"El, it's going to be fine. It's going to take some time but, you know. "he responded. I sighed.
"How long does it take to say sorry?'I exclaimed. He chuckled.
"I don't , I know this is kind of off topic but, Janelle...does she like any one?"he asked sheepishly. II poked him in the ribs.
"Awe, have a little crush Dexie-poo?"I squealed. He swatted my hand away, that moment a whole flood of people came out of the church.
"Valentine's dance. Ask her."I suggested as we walked with the crowd.
'I can't just ask Jan-"he started to say but Janelle cut him off.
'Ask who what?"she said cheerily. I smirked at Dex and nudged him.
"It's nothing, 't worry about it. "he mumbled. I smiled and walked over to my mom and sister. I turned around and gave them one last wave before getting in the car.
