The Enemy Within
By e-pony
The battle line is drawn.
But in this fight,
Who is wrong
And who is right?
That line's become unclear,
Grown indistinct
With the passing of each year.
And sometimes,
In the uncertain hours of the night,
All that's left is fear.
xxx
Don't you ever question
What we have become?
Are we more than just the sum
Of our training and our skill?
Or has the violence of each kill
Bled compassion
From our hearts,
So we are just the parts –
Never to be whole?
xxx
Have we been left
But tempered weapons:
Hard-edged steel,
Cold, bereft,
And lacking soul?
Do you ever feel
The slender thread of life
Break beneath your hands?
Or have the endless years of strife,
And senseless loss in distant lands,
Made each death less real?
xxx
Is my inner nature,
Though bound by a moral code,
Lethal and reactive,
Primed – set to explode?
Is there any mercy left
For hard justice to erode?
Can your mercenary conscience
Hold me to a higher road?

The battle line is drawn.
But in this game,
Both queen and pawn
Bear blame.
As comrades fall to ashes and to dust,
The line is too unclear
To determine who is just.
And, yet, beyond the anger and the fear
A steadfast partner
Offers strength and trust.
