SPOILERS:

The prior story began a semester ago, when Kara was just starting out as a high school freshman and Alex was a sophomore. The girls were struggling to understand how they felt about each other: did they love each other like sisters, or did their feelings run deeper? Kara never had any doubts. She was in love and knew it early on. Alex struggled with her feelings, as she was haunted by expectations: the expectations of her mother, of her beloved late father, of society and even of herself.

But real love cannot be denied for long, and eventually it conquered her resistance. Neither could their forbidden love remain hidden from the judgemental eyes of fellow students, and they soon felt like lepers as word got out of their "incestuous" relationship.

While they worked though their issues, the "sisters" made two good friends. Both Lena and Eric had been saved by Superman a few years ago from an experimental project run by Lex Luthor under the guise of an orphanage. Those experiments gave the teens special abilities: Eric could impress his feelings on other people, and Lena could read the minds of ordinary people (but not Kara's or Eric's minds).

While Alex struggled to suppress her forbidden desires, Lena and Eric conspired to nurture Kara's sexual nature, trying to free their friends and even the school from what Lena thought of as bullshit sex-phobia. The students had an instinct to slut-shame or body-shame girls; Lena wanted to change that to promoting pride in one's feelings and appearance.

Soon after a provocative class project, Kara was changed from outcast to coolness, and she accidentally found herself leading a movement intending to overthrow the school dress code.

During the holiday break, while the group of four friends was welcoming Cookie, a former enemy, into their fold, they had a run-in with Lex Luthor. The evil mastermind had intentions to start a nuclear war, but his plan required using his sister Lena's ability to succeed, so he kidnapped the teens.

Kara needed to play the part of superhero for the first time, but she couldn't allow herself to be seen by anyone. With the help of her friends, she succeeded in rescuing Lena, preventing war and even getting Lex Luthor captured to boot.

However, the teens themselves did not escape capture by the FBI, nor could Kara keep her identity secret from the intelligence agency. The FBI was willing to overlook the super-girl's interference, and they would even monetarily reward the teens for making Lex's capture possible, but only under the condition that Kara and the teens keep quiet about the secrets they had uncovered. Kara in particular, who was drawing a lot of attention to herself, especially in school, needed to cut it out. The FBI and therefore the country demanded that Kara to return to her old invisible self.

So when Kara returned to school at the end of the holiday break, she again became invisible among the very crowd she had inspired to rebel against the school dress code just a week before. Quickly, she was feeling like a leper again and feeling totally miserable. Keeping secrets was not in her nature. Eventually, she was taken aside by one of her admirers, who reminded Kara how important she was to him and to others. Shortly after, Kara returned to school, not only dressed to impress but also sporting her cousin's S on her chest. The symbol was popular for a t-shirt, so she did not give up her identity, but the significance of her defiance was not lost on those seeking to control her. She capped her defiance off by kissing her sister passionately in front of half of the school, re-establishing herself as a hero or a villain, depending on who you asked.
