Kurt groaned. "For the millionth time, we're not doing 'Baby Got Back.' Neither one of us can rap, anyways," he informed his partner. He couldn't believe he had got paired with Sebastian.
It started at the Warblers' meeting that Monday. It had been the first meeting of the Warblers since their next competition had been announced, so, naturally, everybody was eager, wondering what the theme would be this time. However, when Wes had banged his gavel, the room slowly began to simmer down, like always.
Wes had cleared this throat, looking around the room officially, though he couldn't help the small smile on his own face. "Gentlemen," he addressed the boys in the room, who had silenced completely by that point, despite the hum of excitement that had still been lingering in the air, "as many of you know, Regionals are coming up. The council and I have recently been discussing what we should do this year, and, taking Warbler Kurt's claim that Warbler Blaine has too many solos… We've decided to theme our setlist around duets."
Kurt had been shocked. "Really?" He wondered aloud. He supposed after the whole "Gap Attack" fiasco, the council had had enough of Blaine for a little while. Still, it was hard to believe they actually listened, for once.
"Really." David had confirmed with a smile from the council's desk as the boys became to mumble enthusiastically amongst themselves again. Wes banged his gavel again.
"Quiet down. Now, we were thinking that anyone who wanted to perform as a lead at Regionals find themselves a duet partner and audition with them." A few of the boys had immediately locked eyes as if claiming each other as partners mentally. "We will be hosting auditions all week, and we will be picking the best pair. Good luck to you all," Wes banged his gavel once more.
With that, chatter in the room had escalated as the boys all hurried to find themselves duet partners. Kurt had started looking around for Blaine; he had been the only one he had became really close to, besides Jeff and Nick, who would obviously be dueting with each other.
Kurt had raised an eyebrow when he found Blaine chatting to some other boy. Thad, was it?
When Thad went quiet, seeing the slightly annoyed look on Kurt's face, Blaine turned around to face Kurt, himself. He had smiled when he saw Kurt, apparently not at all discouraged by the way he hadn't been immediately handed a solo, for possibly the first time in his life. "Oh! Hi, Kurt! Didn't see you there. Do you have any idea who you're going to be dueting with? Assuming you'll be auditioning, since this was your idea."
Kurt had been taken aback. "Well, uh, no… I thought… Never mind."
"Well, Thad and I were going to do one. I was thinking something by Hey Monday?" Thad nodded from where he was behind Blaine.
"Oh. I mean… I guess I thought you'd want to do one with me?"
Blaine's smile decreased at that. "Kurt… You and I… I can't really see our voices going well together," had been Blaine's lame excuse.
And so Kurt was left partnerless.
Sebastian, the new boy who had just transferred from France, but had somehow managed to already gain a reputation for being crude had been the only other boy left without a partner. He wasn't Kurt's first choice, in fact, he was possibly Kurt's last. Being with the other boy now, though, watching him and laughing as he mocked Sir Mix A-Lot, Kurt had to admit, he couldn't imagine enjoying their assignment nearly as much with any other boy.
