She remembered asking herself this question as a little girl. Is a potato a vegetable? Julie shook her head and went on mixing the pancake batter. In a few minutes, her favorite vegetable would wake up and come down looking for breakfast.
And true enough, Harvey did emerge from the bedroom, his eyes still half-closed and the rest of his body dragging behind in an effort to get back to bed.
"Morning, honey," she smiled, trying to focus on breakfast. But her head went back to the question. A potato was surely a vegetable. A tuber, her teacher used to call it. On the other hand it didn't taste bad like the leafy kind she disliked eating. Potatoes were actually...good. Simple. Bland.
"Good morning, small fry," Harvey said, in a way that made Julie think he wasn't even aware he said it. He slumped on the table and eventually nodded off.
Julie put down her bowl and sat next to Harvey. Grinning, she poked him and said, "You're a real Potato."
"It's a good thing," he answered self-righteously.
"You always convince yourself that," she laughed, "but a couch potato won't get to work by sleeping on the table."
Harvey made a start, as if shocked; he stood all of a sudden, alert, looking at his watch. "Work? Work! You're right! I'd better hurry! It's already—"
"Only six in the morning. Relax," Julie allowed herself to laugh. She kissed his forehead and went back to her cooking. "You have to at least wait for breakfast, dear."
Harvey blushed a little, pretended to be observing a piece of gum stuck to his shoe as a diversion. But Julie didn't mind. Is a potato a vegetable? A tuber, a bland, fiber-rich substance that was simple and healthy. Good for a person to have a potato. A Potato like Harvey, she thought to herself, a big smile now forming on her lips. Her children ought to be proud of their names….
