I do not own Heroes. This story had spoilers for all episodes, just in case.
Claire never understood what it meant to be a mom. Her mother was not as close to her as her father was. Claire loved her mother but she couldn't tell her the secrets she had. It was too late to share now. She was gone. Sylar had taken her and her brother. Now, Claire never talked to her father, but she visited her mom's grave every time she could.
Claire couldn't understand how a mother could abandon her child. Her biological mother had left her; she hadn't been a real mom. Claire remembers when she met her mother years later. She was kind, polite, and she was special. She was special like Claire. She could freeze water. She was a nice woman but Claire still couldn't call her mom.
Claire didn't understand how much mother's truly loved their children until she met Mrs. Petrelli. Mrs. Petrelli had come on the earliest flight she could after hearing the news that her son was in a coma. Claire had watched her as she sat by Peter day and night. She was always there when Claire came to visit. She was always there because she loved her son. It was the touching, heartbreaking gesture of being there that made Claire realize a mother's love for her children.
Claire understood what it meant to be a mom now. From when they were born, to their first day of school, to now, she loved them with all her heart. To have one child is amazing, and to have four children is a blessing. Her children may be in junior high and high school now, but Claire still mothered them to the fullest.
She remembered when her first son James was born, then her daughter Lizzy, Michael, and finally Mary Jane. She remembered every moment and she treasured every moment.
Claire liked to remember when they were small, when she would bake cookies with them, tell them bed time stories, play hide and go seek with them, and take them to the park to play on the swings.
She would kiss every cut and sometimes watch as Lizzy mimicked her power and it healed in an instant. Or they would play in the park and James would run too far, too fast and nearly run the length of Central Park. Claire remembers when MJ used to take the books off the shelf just with her thoughts and Michael would be the best at hide and seek simply because he could become invisible.
Her children were special but Claire had expected that. She and her husband were special too. They were a special family, a great family. At first, Claire never understood what it was to be a mom. But she began to get an idea when she first met her mother in law at the hospital as she watched over her son.
