Déjà vu and All That French
I remembered a few years back, before I got married, that I went to Forget-Me-Not-Valley to get some farming tips when Papa and Rick never wanted to.
This one time, the local Scientist Daryl wanted to show me something. I thought he was a little crazy, but I also thought that maybe because of that craziness he really did have something that might be fun to look at, so I followed him home.
His lab had lots of fizzy-looking liquids and sparkly things that looked really dangerous, so I stayed away while enjoying the view. Somehow I noticed this obscured pathway that lead to the basement.
It was there that I saw this tub, but with a girl inside!
It wasn't just any girl, though!
She had short green hair with pink clam shells on them, and the cutest big blue eyes I've ever seen! She also had this blue-ish green tube top that looked an awful lot like the one in the paintings of the Harvest Goddess that I've seen hung up on the church walls.
Those weren't the unusual things, though. What really stood out to me was the orangey fish tail she had for a bottom half!
I couldn't believe it! A half-girl half-fish person?
She must be an Undine!!!
…uh, I know that sounds like a strange thing to call them.
Most people call them mermaids, right?
It's really weird. Ever since Papa read to me that "Little Mermaid" children's book, I called the first "mermaid" I saw an "Undine". I haven't really gotten out of the habit since then, and I always hoped it wouldn't confuse people when I call them by my personal nickname. Good for me talking about Undines isn't a common subject.
But you know what?
The strangest thing came over me when I was face-to-face with that little Undine girl. Seeing one live, it was like I've actually seen her before, or maybe someone like her? Either way, it looked like she had the same feeling, because she was staring right back at me in the same way.
I don't know how, though. I always thought Undines were made-up. Even if I believed in some fairy tales, I always thought half-fish people were a bit of a stretch.
This wasn't a dream or anything, this was real. Daryl even freaked out when he found me there and told me not to tell anyone else about her. I don't think he was keeping her captive, though. She looked really happy before we got a good look at each other.
Either way, that was weird. I'm pretty sure I haven't met any fish-people before all my life, and I don't think I've ever gone out swimming far enough for one to catch sight of me. But I couldn't help but feel a little déjà vu when I was looking at her.
I feel a little tired right now.
Maybe a little rest will do me some good before we make it the Sunshine Islands.
