10 Years of Questions
"Where are you now?"
Emptiness that nothing will fill. Today, it is stronger than it has ever been, and she doesn't know why.
Flic. Floc. Flic. Floc.
The sound of the rain on the windows.
She hates the rain. It was raining the day they left.
Ayumi looks through the drops without seeing them. She thinks. About them, again. She knows that she should just forget, go on. It only brings more hurt. Yet, it still flickers in her heart, this feeling that she doesn't want to lose. Hope. That's all they've left her.
"One day, you will know everything."
"We'll be fine, don't worry."
"See ya!"
Sentences that still haunt her thoughts. And an other, a question, that lies unanswered: "Where are you now?".
She sighs. It's already been ten years. And the feeling of loneliness won't stop growing. She knows it's the same for Genta, and Mitsuhiko, though they won't say it.
She remembers. They were like two guardian angels, two ghosts, once there, now gone. She was always grave, and he would sometimes be silent, with this sad sparkle in his eyes. At that time, she hadn't seen it. When you're 7, you tend to skip some details. What was fear and sadness she had thought calmness, and what was pain she had taken for the mystery that was part of them. They would support each other, advancing in a darkness that they couldn't escape, keeping their secret safe. But what secret?
Yet, they had always been there to support her, and Mitsuhiko and Genta, to help them when in trouble. They had taught them more than they would have ever learned. Like parents, they would always protect them, they would always know everything.
Ai and Conan… Where are you?
Tears begin to fall. She hates this feeling. She hates it even more, as she feels like she is kept apart. Ran, Agasa, that Shinichi, everybody but the once "Detective Boys" seem to know what happened to the two strange children. With the tears comes the bitter feeling of betrayal, and the need for an answer.
She falls asleep.
"Where are you now?"
xyxyxyxyxyxyxyxyxyxyxyxyxyxyxyx
The sound of a phone call. She wakes up. The rain pours lightly, ready to stop. She takes the phone.
"Hi, Ayumi-chan!!" The voice she has never forgotten, that voice that can make her tears fall and yet warm her heart as none can, chirps at the end of the phone.
"Conan-kun?"She doesn't believe it. That voice should have changed. Yet it feels so real, so similar.
"You still recognize me…" Why does that voice sound so hurt, so guilty?
"Tomorrow, 10 o'clock, Beika Park. It's more than time for the Detective Boys to have a meeting, I guess." She can't speak.
"I'm sorry…"
"Thank you…" is all she says. She puts the phone down.
Outside the sun shines timidly through the remaining clouds and warms her heart. Perhaps she can learn to like the rain, after all.
"I've found you…"
I wrote this in french first, but made a second version in english. Most of the times, it feels like the Detective Boy's feelings are left out of the fan fictions, when Shinichi and Ai go back to their normal lives. Dagron's written a beautiful fic centered on that, called Ce qu'est devenu Edogawa Conan" (What has become of Edogawa Conan), and I advise all french speakers to go read it. Probably that's what inspired me (or is it the James Blunt CD that's playing next to me? ').
Thanks for reading!!
