A/N: Dee-dum-da-dee-dee-dum. . . Oh, I suppose you're reading this, arent' you? Well, people of FF, I present to you my first Harry Potter story! I really don't care much for Malfoy 99.998% of the time, but I felt almost sorry for him when I watched the latest movie.

Once more, this fic HINTS at SPOILERS for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, so you CANNOT say I DIDN'T warn you!!! (I'll quit with the caps now, I promise!)

If you review, I will love you forever!!

I can't stop thinking about the bird. . .

Who would have predicted that Draco Malfoy would be reduced to sobs by the sight of a small white bird. He had opened the cabinet quickly, eager to get it over with. . . And there it was, still, cold, dead as a doornail. At first, he had feared it would come back with a bite taken out of it, like the apple, but no. The reality instilled in him an unearthly terror.

The blond boy fell back, shocked numb. The bird had been singing when he'd shut it in. He felt he should have paused to observe the silence after the thump that told him it had been returned. Tweeting merrily one moment, the next, lifeless. For quite possibly the first time in his life, he understood how the Killing Curse was Unforgivable. Death was meant to be as natural as life, not chosen for you by another who shared the blessing and curse.

It was inhuman, he decided, to kill. A moment after that conviction came the realization that he was dealing with people who had contemptuously cast aside their humanity long ago in order to better serve themselves.

Killing was wrong. He was certain of that much. But he had been assigned to kill, and if he failed in that, he knew he would be killed. There was no forgiveness in such selfish hearts as those with whom he had cast his lot.

He glanced once more at the little bird's hauntingly motionless corpse and it dawned on him that he would be unable to bring himself to complete his mission. He was going to die. He was going to die just like that bird, his life snuffed out as quickly and coldly as he would squash a bothersome insect.

Draco drew his knees up to his chin and wept with fright.
