The Death of Two Brothers

Once upon a time

There were two brothers,

Who loved each other very much.

-

Together they grew up,

In a house,

With people who looked human and acted human,

But were not humans.

-

The old man,

Who might've been a man or might've been a demon,

Said to the youngest brother,

"You are one of us. Let's take care of each other."

Seeing their wealth and their power,

The brother said,

"Yes. We will join you."

-

They were dressed in fine clothes,

Ate fine food,

Went to fine parties,

And lived in finery.

But the older brother did not think that everything was fine.

-

The others in the house looked at him with cold eyes,

They did not often speak to him,

and when they did,

All he could hear was,

"Intruder. How dare you spoil our happiness after we suffered so much? Leave."

-

The older brother did not tell his younger brother,

Because if he even hinted at dissatisfaction with their benefactors,

His eyes would also harden.

That look seemed to say,

"How dare you? They love me. They love us. We are family."

-

Then one day the younger brother too realized things were not so fine.

"It's time you started to help us."

the old man said,

"The war is beginning. Play for us your beautiful music, so we may triumph."

He did.

His fingers moved,

eliciting sounds from the keys.

He sang,

But to him it did not sound like music.

He heard the cry of dead people as they were pulled back to life,

And he heard the quiet desperation and hope of those who called them back,

Only to be killed,

In an effort by the demon to kill more.

-

So the two brothers left,

But they were followed,

And when they saw the people, who were not people,

that they had grown up with,

the younger brother heard,

"Why? How dare you choose him over us? You make us suffer, come back."

The older brother heard,

"Haven't you taken enough from us? Give him back. We will kill you."

But the older brother would not give his younger brother to them,

And the younger brother would not go back.

-

One day,

The demon said,

"Kill them."

So the people who were not people,

But were still so very human,

Did more than give chase.

The younger brother died,

and they mourned,

for his betrayal,

for their love,

and what they had all lost.

-

They never found the older brother,

Because he had lost himself.

There had been someone,

He remembered,

Who he had cared for.

Where was he? Why had he left him alone and allowed him to forget?

Tears unfeelingly rolled from his eyes in cascades,

What did these represent?

Who exactly were these for?

This is an AU poem about Mana and his brother, the 14th, the Noah clan and the Millennium Earl. In the manga I believe that it is suggested that the Earl killed the 14th himself, instead of any of the noah clan. However, it seemed that he felt saddened in some way by the loss of the 14th. This poem really came from thinking about how everyone reacted to the 14th's death.

Until Next Time, Kuroi Fushichou.
