Tom comes on the bridge just a little late as always,
"Your late , Mr. Paris", the Captain announces to the whole of the bridge,
Then everyone smiles as he finds the little box sitting on his chair,
The captain pins his pip back upon his collar and everybody claps,
"I didn't see a little box on my chair", I say attempting a little joke.

I'm happy for my friend he has deserved this,
But I'm sure I've earned it too by now,
Still after six years of growing up,
I'm still just Ensign Kim.

In those years I've died twice,
Moved from one Quantum universe to another,
I've fallen for the wrong sister,
And been tricked into thinking I was another species.

Species 8472 have infected me and almost killed me,
I've been infatuated with Seven of Nine,
Caught a disease through making love with Tal,
I've grown a lot I'm sure.

But here I am Ensign Kim,
He who helped design the most advanced Astrometrics lab in Starfleet,
And yet all I am is Ensign Harry Kim,
And yes I'm glad for Tom.
