A/N: Happy new year! How is everyone? Hungover? tired? Full of energy, ready and raring to go? I hope it was great one, no matter what you did.

The next chapter of "Distance" is on its way. After a month of fluff, my brain is having trouble gettting into the darker, depressing mode for that story. lol.

Enjoy!

The streets of Boston were filled with drunken revellers. People stumbling in and out of bars. Those that started the night far too early already puking out on the street.

In a small apartment a safe distance away from all the drunken merriment, lay Detective Jane Rizzoli and Dr. Maura Isles.

Wrapped up together on the couch, limbs entwined, they half watched the TV as the countdown for the new year began.

10... Their first new year together as a couple, both women gazed lovingly at each other. Each enjoying the comfort of the others presence.

9... Jane's warm smile transformed into a grin. "I can't believe we're finally here."

"Jane."

8... "You wouldn't believe how many times I daydreamed of spending new years like this…"

6... "…With you."

5... "Me too."

"Jane."

4... Warm hands moved gracefully over sensitive skin, as Maura inched even closer.

3... A thrill of anticipation rushed through Jane's lithe body.

She could feel herself shaking.

2... "Open your eyes."

1... "Jane!"

Jerking upright, a startled Maura jumped as a formally sleeping, and now disorientated, Jane Rizzoli shouted "HAPPY NEW YEAR!" and pulled her friend into a searing kiss.

Jane pulled back with still hazy sleep glazed eyes, a happy sigh escaping. Maura stood frozen to the spot, waiting for reality to kick in for her soon to be embarrassed best friend.

Warm brown eyes focused, then grew wide. Realisation dawning.

"Uhh…"

Maura waited patiently in silence, not wanting to push or further embarrass her best friend. Allowing Jane the time to process and figure out what she felt, and deal with the unexpected situation in a manner she felt comfortable.

In continued silence they studied one another. Unspoken questions passing back and forth in the pregnant atmosphere.

Breaking finally, Jane mumbled her excuses and left, her eyes glued to the honey blonde until it was a case of look where you're going or walk into a wall.

Running her tongue lightly over her lips, Maura smiled to herself. "Happy new year, indeed."
