In the darkness of his crypt, when Spike was alone and too drunk to move, he would replay the latest moment he shared with Buffy. Over and over, rewind, pause.
Flipping and tweaking until he was satisfied with the picture they painted.
He'd lie in his bed, trying to ignore the wet sheets as he told himself that she returned his feelings. He'd almost have himself convinced, almost believe there was something soft under the violence. Then, the alcohol would fade, the broken bones would make themselves known, and he'd remember he needed to wash blood out of his sheets.
