The Last Night Brambleclaw and Squirrelpaw

Brambleclaw sat in a clearing, this seemed like the only quiet he ever got. A sudden disturbing in the nearby bushes made him perk up. Squirrelpaw stepped out looking as bright as ever. "What are you doing?" Brambleclaw hissed.

"I followed you out of the camp; you know how my dad's been treating us recently. I needed to get away. You don't mind if I'm here do you?" The ginger she-cat asked innocently.

Brambleclaw looked over her. She looked bad, her fur tangled and muddy, he could also sense waves of emotion coming off of her. "You can stay." He muttered.

You come to me with scars on your wrist
You tell me this will be the last night feeling like this

I didn't want you to see me cry, I'm fine

"Great!" She exclaimed. "Now scoot over." She padded up to Brambleclaw and curled up next to him.

Brambleclaw was shocked that he felt very protective of her. Hadn't he just been in an argument with the stubborn she-cat the other day?

"I can't believe my dad would just turn on me like this." Squirrelpaw said suddenly.

Brambleclaw frowned. He didn't know what to say, Firestar's sudden coldness towards her had bewildered him.

"He hates me." She said sadly.

I'm so sick of when they say
It's just a phase, you'll be o.k. you're fine
But I know it's a lie

"No he doesn't. He loves you very much, he's just…" Brambleclaw fumbled for a word "Stressed."

Squirrelflight managed a weak smile. "You're great you know that?"

Brambleclaw smiled coyly. "Of course I do!"

They sat for a long while; neither of them said a word. Brambleclaw relished the silence; it was why he had come out here in the first place, though he hadn't counted on Squirrelpaw showing up. The odd thing was, to Brambleclaw everything felt right, as if Squirrelpaw belonged here with him.

Squirrelpaw suddenly stood up. Brambleclaw looked at her for an explanation. "I have to get back to the camp, it's getting late."

Brambleclaw nodded. "Make sure you're careful on your way back. Badgers are very unpredictable."

Squirrelpaw smiled. "I will, and thanks for letting me stay out here with you."

Brambleclaw flicked his tail. "You can come back anytime you want."
