Shimmering, swirling, shifting.
Memories. They're nice.
But that's all they really are.
More shifting, more swirling, more shimmering.
A man in a red coat. A girl with eyes like emeralds, also swirling.
The showing of faces, the baring of souls. What did that one brown eye see in those sparkling green orbs?
Only we know.
Shimmer: 'She's so young, but she's a spitfire. Will she lift the spirits of the other guardians? Or will this journey see the end of the sparkle in her eyes?'
Swirl: 'Those eyes. They seem to move in ways that could hypnotize. I could see myself falling into their depths.'
Shift: 'Young. So young. But beautiful. The light amidst all this darkness. My own personal sanctuary.'
Shimmering, swirling, shifting. These are our memories. They're nice.
But is that all they really are?
Rikku's eyes shot open, her lungs inhaling sharply as if she'd been holding her breath. The pyreflies, now done showing her what memories they contained, drifted slowly away from her. They returned to their slow swooping motion over the Moonflow, several feet from where Rikku sat on it's banks. A small trail of tears dripped slowly down her face, but she didn't notice or care.
"Auron..." she whispered as she rested her hand near her fluttering heart. She knew that he had cared for her. But to be able to hear his thoughts on that fateful day that they met...it was unreal.
'He felt a connection the moment we looked at each other. Just like I did...'
A few more tears escaped her eyes, but she smiled through them. He might be gone, but their connection remained even now. He would always be there in her mind and especially in her heart. She had her memories. And they were definitely more than just that. They were her reason for rising out of bed every morning, for smiling at what each new day brought her. Her reason for moving on and knowing that, one day, she'd see him again.
The pyreflies seemed to agree with her silent thoughts as they shimmered, swirled and shifted across the still waters.
