"Why doesn't anyone believe me?" Alice asked herself as she wander alone through the streets. Every since she had arrived home from Wonderland, people had been avoiding her as if she had the plague. Only her brother and her fathers friends ever spoke to her, and they all treated her like she was the child that she had been when they had lost her mother. Although she had expected this, after her father's death. Despite all of that, she knew that she wasn't alone.
When she walked around town, she would often talk to her friends from Wonderland. She could see them walking with her, other stared as if she was talking to thin air. She often told them about her father, and sang them songs that she had made up. They were her only company, and she had grown to accept it.
Looking up from her daze, she realized that she had come to the lake at the outskirts of the town. Next to the lake was a willow that's arms seemed to beacon the girl. She remembered climbing trees when she was young, and ran to it, pulling herself up into the branches.
She swung her legs over one of the tree's thick arms, leaning her head one of the small branches that was covered with leaves. Alice sung softly to herself, swinging her legs to the toon of her song. Smiling blissfully, as her eyes gently closed, surrounding her with darkness.
SNAP
You would imagine that it would hurt when she hit the water, but her fall seemed almost graceful. The broken branch floated away from her, not hindering her landing. She didn't seem to realize what was going on, her eyes opened slowly, still smiling her childish smile. The water spread skirt of her long dress around her making her look like a mermaid. Her blond hair curtained her shoulders, some of the willows leaves still tangled in the yellow strands.
For one beautiful moment, she looked like that peaceful child she once was. Then her clothes became to heavy to stay a float. In a slow, but clean movement, Alice was dragged to a watery grave, the smile never leaving her lips.
I'm currently in a production of Hamlet, and this is based off of Ophelia's death.
