Authors Note: I always want to do a story in the aftermath of die by the sword, so here it is.

To be able to hear

Natalia looked at the little note regarding the cancelling the doctor had given her. She was feeling slightly frustrated and annoyed. All of this due to the abuse of her ex-husband.

"Damn you, Nick," she whispered, as a tear ran down her cheek.

Had she never gotten involved with him, maybe this would never have happened. Of course the explosion was a big part of it, but still. Her hearing was one of the most important things in her line of work, without that she could hardly function at all.

She knew it and her coworkers knew it.

She sighed, getting up from the chair, knowing she would need treatment and in worse case a hearing aid. There was no way around it.

Walking out of the clinic she wished with all her might she could change her past, that way she would never have to deal with it. That way she wouldn't have to think about feeling different, but now she was and she knew it.

Sighing she got in the car and drove to a familiar house, she opened the door and threw the keys on the counter in the hallway. Then she got inside and sunk down on the blue couch, sighing heavily.

"Sweetheart, you're back, what did the doctor say?" she could hear Calleigh's soft voice as she walked into the living room. She had most likely heard her come in.

Heard her come in, that was something Natalia had not been able to lately, or hear her breathing while she slept, or her heartbeats. She missed it as she loved hearing every little sound her girlfriend made.

"It's not good news, I may in the end start wearing a hearing aid, I'm not too comfortable by it," Natalia answered, looking at her.

"I feared that, but sweetheart, isn't it better to use a hearing aid than not hear at all. That way you can function as normal as well," said Calleigh in a soft tone.

"I suppose you are right, but it will still take some time getting used to," said Natalia with a sigh.

"You'll manage," said Calleigh carefully kissing her cheek.

"I know, it's just annoying, mostly because this came from an old injury due to Nick," said Natalia.

"I can understand you are frustrated, but at least there are ways to fix it, rather than you losing your hearing for good. At least that should be a good thing," Calleigh pointed out.

"I know and I'm thankful for that, but you do not like me less because of it?" she asked in a very insecure tone.

"No, I could never stop loving you no matter what happened," said Calleigh honestly.

"I love you too," Natalia whispered, kissing her soft lips.

"I know, if it helps I can come with when you get the implant," Calleigh offered.

"I would really appreciate if you did," said Natalia, smiling brightly at her. Calleigh just giggled, making sure to kiss her again, making her feel loved.

And like that it was settle, Calleigh would come with when she got her implant and she never once minded it, she was just glad Natalia was now able to hear. As for Natalia, no one would be happier to get her hearing back, as not only could she hear everything at work, especially Ryan's joke, but she could hear every move her Calleigh made, at least when she was close. And that was the thing she needed to feel secure and at peace.
