When Speed Becomes Fear
Barry didn't realize it at the time, but challenging his 18 year old nephew to a race was a very bad idea. The rules he made were the same ones that he had when he raced Superman. Run 100 laps around the world and whoever finished the 100th lap first, won.
Lap one was okay, Wally was only a microsecond ahead of him.
Lap two Wally was 5 feet ahead of him.
Lap three the red head was 2 miles ahead of him.
On lap four, he could no longer see his nephew but could feel that he was 10 miles ahead.
On lap five, Wally passed him.
He should have been thrilled that the younger speedster was that much faster than him, but it only made him worried. He could see and feel a distortion in the air.
The beginning of his 6th lap, the beginning of Wally's 7th lap, Barry knew something was going horribly wrong. The Speed Force was opening.
Turning around, Barry started running the opposite way to Wally, praying he can run into his nephew before the Speed Force takes him. What takes only seconds, feels like hours to the blonde speedster.
He can see Wally running.
He can see that his nephew doesn't know what the distortion is.
And he can see that the chasm is beginning to take Wally into itself.
Barry forces himself to run even faster than he has been and manages to tackle Wally into the water, severing the young man's connection to the opening. He feels Wally cling to him and knows everything will be alright.
Swimming to the surface, he watches as the rip in time and space closes. When the two speedsters surface they are both gasping for air.
The normal flow of time returns to them as Wally clings to his Uncle. 'Even speedsters need to slow down at times, and this is definitely one of those times,' Barry thinks to himself.
Barry leans back in the water slightly and fear filled blue eyes lock with younger fear filled green eyes.
"Never run that fast again," Barry demands, hands tightening their grip around Wally to reassure himself that the teen is still there.
Wally nods, eyes slightly watering as he replies,"I won't."
