The first time James Potter asked out Lily Evans, he was 14. The day before, he had pulled a prank on her and had consequently avoided her for the rest of the day. This particular question was posed in the morning, and, coincidentally, the first time Lily had seen James since the prank.

"Lily," James pleaded, "will you go out with me?" He handed her a long-stemmed yellow rose. The girls watching (of course the question was asked publicly, because James was insecure) sighed. They wished a boy would give them a rose. Lily and her two best friends, Kelly and Hannah, did not sigh. Well, Kelly almost did, but that's not the point.

Lily delicately held out her hand for the rose. Clenching her fist around the stem, she held the flower up to her face. And bit it. Lily Evans tore that poor, defenseless yellow rose to shreds in her teeth.

"James Potter," she started, in a politely furious way, "I'm giving you five seconds to get the hell away from me before I RIP OFF YOUR HEAD AND FORCE-FEED IT TO THE GIANT SQUID!"

And he ran...

Too bad Lily was faster.
