AN: So, I got a little tired of listening to Christmas songs, and had turned to Taylor Swift's album of songs ranging from heartbroken to hell bent on revenge. I remembered seeing an AU on tumblr with Matt and Karen as Prince Eric and Ariel from The Little Mermaid. And... yeah. Enjoy.

A small music box in the grand yet austere room was the only source of sound for the redhead taking up the space on the bed. She was voiceless, therefore powerless without her Scottish lilt and fiery retorts.
Matt had, instead of her, chosen Billie as his wife to be. She could do nothing about it, when she closed the oak door from the happy couple practicing the waltz on the foyer. How could he not remember? A sob broke out of her chest, tears ruining the makeup that took at least an hour to do. But she didn't care about that, the man of her daydreams was slipping out of her fingers, and she didn't know what to do.
Slowly, she rose from the carpeted floor, and started dancing slowly to herself. A melody she'd heard on one of the ships when she was young played in her head. Her bare feet didn't make a sound when she twisted and twirled to the sad tune.
You should be happy, she thought to herself. But how can I? The dream I thought turned out to be a nightmare.
With a somber sigh, she stopped from her movements and wiped the tears angrily from her eyes. If he can't figure it out on his own, I'll have to help him. She took a bag from one of the drawers and took the meager possessions she had when she arrived at the ostentatious castle.
When she opened the door, lively music was being played by the band still. The dreadful blonde had gone, and what was left was the prince in a slight daze, chuckling to himself as he danced with the air around him. She would've cracked a smile at it, until she realized who he thought he was dancing with.
Her steps on the cold marble were dulled at the lack of shoes, and she tried her best not to shiver, the frigid sea air was the only thing that cooled the environment.
"Oh, and who's this?" was the first thing Matt said when he saw her come down the stairs. The redhead looked visibly upset at this discovery, but it when unnoticed. A lad stood up from the edge of the stage of the band, and stuttered "That's Karen, sir."
"Karen, eh?" he looked back to her, a smile on his face. Her smile in return felt much like a grimace to her. "Well, Karen," he looked down to their feet. "Is there a reason why you aren't wearing any shoes?" though she was well aware that she couldn't speak, she opened her mouth to present her situation, until she was rudely interrupted by the same floppy-haired prince.
"Luke! Get this girl some shoes!" he said, and the younger boy went off to a direction out of her line of sight. "Wouldn't want anyone in my kingdom to be shoeless when I get married tomorrow," he grinned broadly, adjusting his tie unconsciously. Tears started to leak out of her eyes at the sentence, but she bit her lip to keep them from falling.
Before Luke came back with a pair of shoes, Karen had already run off, unable to force back her tears.
"Was it something I said?" Matt asked cluelessly, and the other could only shrug, wondering in vain what could've set off the maiden in order for her to react in such a way.
So I'll watch your life in pictures like I used to watch you sleep
And I feel you forget me like I used to feel you breathe
And I keep up with our old friends just to ask them how you are
Hope it's nice where you are
