Saturday 8:00 am
The morning dew glistened off the window of a tiny gray office building that was located mid center of the town of Bunny Burrows. A bright streak from the sun ran itself across the glass just as two nervous bunnies held paws while sitting in front of a branch manager.
Stuart and Bonnie Hopps were listing to a young brown bunny who was explaining loan terms that they had taken out and about their options for repayment.
The bunny's name plate stated his name in big bold white letters and his expression was stoc blank as if his soul was dead and relaying bad news was just another part of his daily routine. Bradley Cutterson. His name made Stu grit his teeth as his ears tilted in Bradley direction.
"I'm sorry sir but if you and your wife dont bring your payment in by the end of the month then we will be forced to foreclose on your farm." Bradley said.
A large tear fell from Bonnie which landed on her husbands paw with a loud wet plop. Fire burned in the strong buck and a need to protect his family made his pride take a back seat as he leaned forward closer to Bradley.
"Please tell me there is another way. Any other way for us to get some kind of extension!" Stu said as he lifted his paw from his shaking wife and wiped her tears away.
The display seemed to move something in the brown buck who was now picking up the loose papers on his desk and tapped them on it to straighten the pile out. His expression softened and sitting up he looked out past the Hopps through his glass door to see if anyone was nearby. A moment of awkward silence fell between the three bunnies. But before Stu could begin to clear his throat Bradley pulled out a pen and scribbled a number and a name down on a small yellow notepad that was on his left side then pawed the slip of paper over to Stu.
A look of concern was on Bradleys face as he lowered his voice to almost a whisper, "that's Mr. Henry Wildes home number. The owner of this chain mind you. I must caution you though he's a fox and with all that craziness going on in Zootopia right now-." He paused for a moment as both Bonnie and Stu leaned in closer to hear him better. "Predators gone savage indeed, convince the owner about giving you an extension if you are able to- although you might have better luck selling your entire carrot stock before a fox will listen to a bunny!"
All three bunnies sat back in their respective chairs with sullen expressions on their faces after that. The Hopps knew full well the extensive damage a fox could do towards a bunny, in fact they were in the sinking ship that they were now because of a fox.
Stu nearly spat on the ground just thinking about the portly fox they had become partners with by supplying him blueberries so he could make pies with and sell. The sales split down the middle between them. Stu should have learned his lesson from the fox the first time though, like when he clawed one of his daughters on the face and of course the reformed fox had slipped up and mawed another mammal, one of his customers which made Hopps farm produce almost all but unsellable with anyone in the tri burrows. The Hopps brand name had been smeared and it was going to take a long time to get it back to where it was.
Bonnie picked up the stiff anger that was brewing in her husband and quickly grabbed his paw and planted a kissed his cheek lightly while softly calming him down.
"Everything happens for a reason dear. We will overcome this bump in the road." She said as she turned to Bradley and cleared her throat before speaking again, "thank you Mr. Cutterson. We will see about giving him a call. After all, all foxes can't be bad, can they?"
Stu smiled at his wife's optimistic outlook on life and decided she was right. They would prevail over this minor setback and after standing up he found myself holding out his paw to a mammal that he despised almost as much as he disked foxes.
"Sorry we couldn't come up with a better solution. Like having the money for you. We are dealing with a bit of a fox problem already so hopefully not all of them are jerks." Stu said as Bradley shook his paw and gave him a look of pity.
Bonnie and Stu held paws as they made their way out of the small office and out to their blue pickup truck.
Stu hung back a moment before helping his wife into the truck which stopped her in her eagerness to leave only to look back at her husband, "you alright dear?" Bonnie said with a little bit of worry in her tone of voice.
While pulling on his blue suspenders he looked his wife over. Slowly. Very slowly and then let out a sigh as he finally bunnied up and asked her what was on his mind.
"When should we tell the kids that were going to lose the farm?"
His question went unanswered however she found herself leaning forward very quickly and pressing her lips to his and for a brief moment both let their worries slid, if only for a moment.
Their eyes slowly opened and they looked into one another's as they held each other in the parking lot. Bonnie pulled away first and opened the truck door without looking away from him. She knew she had calmed him down as she could. His racing heart could be heard pounding loudly in his chest from where she stood.
Holding the paper in her paw which she had somehow took from him in the heat of the moment was now waving in his direction and with a smile Bonnie cherped merrily at her husband, "lets see about talking to this Mr. Wilde first before upsetting our babies."
Her words made Stu smile as he crossed the distance to her side and helped her up into the truck. Her carrot skirt pulled up slightly on her legs and she had flicked her tail at him lovingly which made him get a bit excited despite having hundred of kits with her. He still loved her like he did the moment they first met. He loved her oh so dearly and would give her the world and then some.
Then at that thought he made his way over to the driver side all while the sun shone brightly upon him as it rose higher into the sky.
The two bunnies made their way home without any problems. A long dirt road led up to their farm house which had seen better days. However a new set of grey paws was busying themselves with fixing that. Both Stu and Bonnie blinked at one another as a ladder was up on the side of the house and one of their bravest daughters was midway up it with a paint can which caused both to utter her name in unison, "JUDY!"
As Stu pulled the truck to a stop in front of the house he marveled at one of his favorite daughters accomplishments, over half the house was newly painted. The old fence out front was repaired and painted white, gutters cleaned and all kinds of other things had been done since she had returned from the big city. The big city that welcomed her only to toss her out just as quickly.
He hated everything bad that had happened to his daughter but was glad she was back for good. Thinking back he recalled the day she had returned home. A look of defeat on her face as she bawled her eyes out into her mother's chest.
Apparently when she had gotten her job as a police officer the chief in charge gave her an unsolvable case with a short time limit and when she failed to find a missing otter she was forced to resign. Part of Stu wanted to march up to that police station and give that buffalo a piece of his mind but then again she was home safe and sound and that's all that really mattered to him personally.
The truck had caught Judys attention and as her parents got out of the truck she had climbed down the ladder to greet them. Unlike the rest of her siblings Judy knew where they had gone and what was at stake. She had looked up her family's records when she returned home and found her family just breaking even money wise. Then he messed up. The big jerk Gideon Gray attacked another bunny and her family was paying the price for his crimes as their family's name was blacklisted which meant no more income and no income would mean losing her home and farm.
She quickly ran up to her parents and pulled them into a big hug. Her pink checkered shirt swayed in the breeze of the morning wind and a calming sensation over took the lot of them.
"He-hey there Jude, Jude the dude. Remember that one?" Stu said hesitantly which caused his daughter to smile wary back at him. The nickname was not one of her favorites but it was something that has stuck with her since she grew up grappling with her brothers and doing boy chores instead of girls chores.
Judy pulled back and gave her parents a quick glance before asking the million dollar question, "are we going to lose the farm?" She said a tad bit quietly so no one else would over hear.
Bonnie held up the small piece of paper triumphantly. The action made Judys ears spike skyward in the hopes that whatever was on the paper was going to save them. Stu spoke up first before his wife could say it though.
"All our hopes rest on calling the owner and begging him for an extension. A Mr. Wilde is his name." As Stu said that Judy looked like she was about to shred the paper into a trillion pieces which made the worried father quickly wave his wifes paws down with the paper and glare at his now enraged daughter who was rather hard to get angry in the first place.
"Sweetie is something wrong with this Mr. Wilde? I know Bradley said he was rather difficult but-." Bonnies words were cut off as Judy sethed out her next words while clenching her paws into hard fist .
"That jerk lied to me. He stole from me and was an indirect cause for why I had to resign from the force! If I ever see him again i'll ring his furry neck! That no good Nick Wilde!" As Judy spoke she uncharacteristically thumped her right foot on the ground several times at an accelerated pace which was hard to tell just how many times she had done it.
Judy's mother was the first to put up her paws in a calming manner towards her daughter while looking the paper over then said in a surprised voice that caught Judys attention, "this says Henry Wilde not Nick Wilde sweetie, so maybe it's someone different altogether." As Bonny said that she held out the paper to Judy who looked it over and let out a deep sigh as if all her built up anger had left her tiny body in one shot.
Stu clapped his paws and tried to retrieve the paper from Judy, "now i'll just give Mr. Wilde here a call and hopefully we can come to some reasonable terms." When Stu said that Judy however held the paper closer to her chest and mumbled incoherently to herself then looked at her father with a dead serious look in her eyes as she said something that shocked the two older bunnies.
"Let me call this Henry and get the extension. I can do this. After all it's the least I can do for you guys for allowing me to come back home and stay here after failing to be a police officer longer than three days." Judy said that while pulling out her phone and looked at her mother and father for approval.
A silent minute passed before Bonnie nodded at her daughter and said in a very understanding calm voice, "go ahead!"
Judy's father whipped around to face Bonnie. Horror and nervousness evident on his face as he bit down on his lower lip. The wind took that moment to blow extra hard into them and caught the buck off guard. His baseball cap went sailing away which made him go wide eyed and give chase.
Taking that moment of not having her father standing and glaring at her. Judy dialed up the number.
Burring Burring.. Burring Burr-
On the third ring someone picked up and a somewhat older voice cracked out of her phone at her, "h-ello?"
Judy who had been holding her breath during the ringing promptly replied in her kindest sweetest voice.
"Hi! Am I speaking with a Henry Wilde?" Judy said which granted her a softer slicker sounding voice from the mammal on the phone, "your speaking to the one and only. How may I help such a fine sounding female who has called me out of the blue?"
As Henry said that Judy tried to stifle a laugh because her father was desperately jumping after his hat now and failing. The covered laugh filtered out into a sensual giggle from Judy who snapped instantly back into why she had called him in the first place.
"Mr. Wilde. This is Judy Hopps. My parents have a loan out with your company out in Bunny Burrow and if you would be willing to give us an extra month i'm sure we will be able-." Judy was cut off as Henry yelled into the phone back her.
"Stop right there missy! Not another word about loans and such business talk while i'm relaxing at home leisurely. Good day Ma'am!"
Before he could hang up on her Judy had one last thing to say which she was hoping would work in her favor and was basically putting her family at risk trying but what else did they have too loose at this point since he was clearly father like son.
"Nick was right! You are worthless. Goodbye!" As Judy said that she immediately ended the call which made her mother's face contort into such a disapproving way that she started to berate her daughter for messing up their last chance faster than a bunny could run.
"Why did you say such things to him? Now we will lose the farm for sure. I don't know why I let you call-." As Bonnie griped at daughter Judy held up her paw and was counting down from what looked to be three digits.
Burring Burring. Burr-
Judy smiled at her mother and answered her phone with a deep. Very deep sarcastic undertone that would have made her twin sister who had the exact opposite outlook on life as her own cherry one proud.
"Yeees? Hopps family farm, soon to be gone. How may I help you?" her words dragged on and a frantic male voice came back at her which made her mother move closer to hear the conversation better.
"Ho- how do you know my Nicky?" As Henry said that Judy took great care in formulating her next few words. Her acting was superb after all.
"Nicky. My Nicky. The foxy fox with green eyes who loves wearing his unholy green floral pattern shirts and who also hangs out with a costume wearing midget fox. That Nicky?" Judys words hung in the air as an eerie silence fell between her and Henry but it didn't last as Henry responded almost franticly now even more so than his first words.
"Yes! That's my Nicky. Wait he's still wearing that green shirt-." Henry's words were cut as Judy piped up in a nonchalant voice. She had him right were she wanted him.
"Never heard of him. This is after my business phone and I only discuss business on it while working at my family's farm." Judys words made her mother look like she might faint for all her daughters slick talking. Henry however caught on and fell right into her trap.
"You said your family's last name is Hopps right?" As he spoke Judy could hear papers rustling about to which Judy responded in kind, "Hopps. Stuart and Bonnie Hopps would be my parents."
Two minutes of silence passed after that but after Henry came back over the phone. His tone of voice was still shaky as if he was going to lose himself if Judy hung up.
"A couple of bunnies living out in the burrows who borrowed a sum of money back almost ten years ago. The loan has another ten years to go but seems to be in default with a few days left and you said you needed an extension?" Henry asked Judy who was more than happy to answer him now.
"We need at least an extra two months-." Judy didn't get a chance to finish explaining why as Henry quickly cut her off.
"Done, two month extension. Now tell me about my son. How is he? Is he eating ok? Does he really still wear those ugly green shirts and-." Henry was laughing now as he continued to talk like he was waiting to hear about his son forever, "is he hanging out with Fin after all these years still?"
The flood of questions poured in and Judy was only half listening as both her and her mother were still binkying into the air in joy at getting the extension. But Judy needed to answer him and found herself having to run a fine line of answering the clearly desperate fox's questions as best she could.
"Nicks doing fine. He eats his blueberries like normal and of course he still hangs out with Fin." Judy embellished a little. As she spoke since she only saw him steal one blueberry and was now assuming Fin was the name of the little fox.
A deep sigh came from Henry as he settled down, "thank you for letting me know about my son. I haven't heard from him in over twenty years now. Not since we saw each other at his mother's." As Henry said that Judy got caught up in the moment at hearing that his son hadn't seen his father in twenty years.
"Well he talks about you two all the time. Goes out to his mother's every now and again." Judy lied. She couldn't believe the words that came out of her mouth and apparently neither did Henry as he responded with much skepticism.
"My Nicky going out to see his mother? Now that'd be the day." Henry said which irritated Judy.
"He does and he will more often. In fact he was thinking about taking me over there just the other day!" Judy covered her mouth with her paw. She didn't even know what she was saying or how she was going to get out of the deep hole she was digging herself in and just like that Henry asked her a question that sent Judy into panic mode.
"Just what is a little bunnies relation towards my son again?" His words hung in the air and Judy spouted out the first thing that came to mind.
"I'm his girlfriend. Why?" She instantly regretted her words and was now in a lying spiral going out of control. Even her mother was shaking her head at her as Judy found herself stuck. At least her father wasn't around to hear all of this.
"Darlin thats utterly nonsense. My son with a bunny? You must be joking!" Henry said while his tone changed to a no nonsense one that he had when she first brought up the extension but was turned down. The tone made her speak without thinking as she quickly yelled back at him.
"Nick can love whoever he wants to love. He calls me cute all the time and I don't even mind it and you know how bunnies don't like being called that plus he's always staring at my fluffy cotton tail like some kind lude beast. Did he learn such deplorable manners from his father?" Judy said which put Henry on the defence.
"He- he didn't learn such acts from me young lady and fine. He can love a bunny if he wants too but I intend on at least meeting both of you in the fur. He may want to avoid me for the rest of his days but he certainly won't keep his mate from seeing his own father at least once in my life. I'm not getting any younger at sixty five you know!"
His words gave Judy pause for a moment. She had no idea what she was doing anymore or why she was lying to this poor desperate old fox who was clearly missing his son and now she was Nicks mate? She had never slept with anyone let alone a fox who had caused her so much strife and angst which only made her next words that came out of her mouth all that much harder to shallow.
"Fine in three weeks. I will drag Nick out to his mothers and you can meet us there!" As Judy spoke she slapped her face with her paw and even gained a gasp from her mother who now had her ears droopy and low for what might have been a first in her entire life.
Henry's reply was said with much scepticism again as he seemed to be rustling with some papers yet again.
"Little bunny if you meet me at my sons mothers grave in three weeks I will personally wipe your family's loan clean. That's how much faith I have in all of this web of lies you seem to of been spouting out. Heck for all I know Nick is still living under that bridge over in the abandoned warehouse area." Henry finished just as a very angry Judy started up.
"We will be there you old jerk and you better not be late!" Judy hung up the phone after yelling that last bit. A tear rolled down her cheek just as her father came over to her side. A look of worry was evident on his face as he found his wife's ears down and his daughter crying.
"What does the fox say?" Stu asked as he balled up his paw into a fist, ready to strike at the offending fox who had clearly upset his wife and daughter.
Judy took off towards the house at a dead sprint without answering and Bonnie brought Stu in for a hug.
A long time past in silence as the two hugged. So much so that countless sons and daughter had come out of the house to see what was troubling their mother. They had never even seen her with her ears down. Not even when they broke the big tv.
The two pulled away from their long hug and Bonnie forced her ears back up just as she whispered into Stu's ear, "we got a two month extension on the loan."
Stu shouted in joy at his wife's words, "whoopie! Were saved!" However she wasn't done and pulled his ear back to her lips and said something that made his blood run cold even though the morning sun was baking them in its warm embrace.
"Judy is leaving for Zootopia again and she might have to get a fox to fall in love her within the next three weeks!" Stu fainted in her paws after hearing such unholy words being uttered out of his lovely wife's lips. Their children rushed to their fallen father's side and helped their mother support him up as they all made their way towards the house were a frantic Judy was tearing into her room and quickly packing her suitcase.
She knew life was messy and unpredictable and that things don't always go your way but this mess that she just made for herself and her family wasn't going to just go away. She needed to find that missing fox. That fox named Nicholas Wilde who had lied to her, stolen from her, caused her to lose her job because she couldn't find him the first time. He who was her only lead in finding the missing otter. This time she was going to find him! For her family's sake and her own, plus not to mention she would have to make him her boyfriend somehow and get him to go out to his mother's grave and meet his father after twenty years. That last thought eluded her as she closed her now fully packed suitcase and left her room in a hurry.
