Wyatt didn't know what woke him – a noise? A movement? All he knew was that he was wide awake. Glancing over at Lucy and Rufus he saw that they were both sleeping soundly.
"No need to wake them" he thought as he carefully and quietly got out of bed, knowing he needed to check their surroundings. Moving stealthily around the dark room, he made his way to the door. He peered out into the shadowy hallway but nothing seemed amiss – no movement or sounds disturbed the peace. Wyatt shivered involuntarily, clad only in a pair of light pyjama pants he noticed the night had turned cold. There was nothing of note in the hallway, nothing to indicate what had disturbed his sleep. He continued his reconnaissance, making his way to the next doorway along the hall. Ever so gently, he pushed the door ajar and peered inside. A small whimper came from the bed by the wall. This must have been what he had heard earlier. Wyatt crept into the room and gazed down at his small daughter. She was sleeping, quiet for once rather than the loud and boisterous two year old who normally ran him ragged with her games, questions and incessant chatter. He smiled down at her, gently stroking the soft skin of her cheek as he pulled her covers from the floor and covered her once more. He wasn't sure how long they would stay on since she had rolled herself into a little ball to keep warm and was bound to kick them off again before morning.
Wyatt left the room as quietly as he could and made his way back to his bedroom. Who knew those Delta Force skills would come in so useful in escaping quietly from small children's bedrooms? As he entered his own room he saw that Lucy was sitting up in bed cradling their two-week old baby Rufus in her arms. She smiled up at him.
"Everything OK?" she whispered.
"Yeah, Jamie just kicked all her covers off again!" he replied, giving her his trademark smirk. He leaned down and took the recently-fed baby from her arms, placing him carefully over his shoulder. Rubbing his back gently, and kissing him on his tiny head he asked
"How's this little man doing?"
"Oh, you know, hungry as ever!" Lucy replied, snuggling back down under the covers with a yawn. Wyatt carefully laid the sleeping baby in his Moses basket and joined his wife back in bed. His arms snaked round her and he drew her to him. He couldn't believe his luck at moments like this. His beautiful wife Lucy – the love of his life – in his arms, and the two wonderful children she had given him were all he could ever want.
