Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
I lost a friend
"I'm so sorry," Jack said as he looked down at the small gray stone. "I should have been there. I could have saved you."
He fell to his knees in front of the tombstone that bore the name of his first believer. Jamie Bennett.
"This is all my fault." Jack cried. A tear slipped down his cheek. Another tear soon followed. Suddenly Jack's wave of emotion came out all at once. A river of tears came from his eyes as he remembered all the fun times that he and Jamie shared.
The first time Jamie saw him and the surprised "Jack Frost." and the "You just made it snow... in my room!" When Jamie stood up to Pitch without a trace of fear. "I do believe in you, I'm just not afraid of you."Jamie helped Jack find his center and without that, he wouldn't be a guardian. "We'll always be there, Jamie." Except he wasn't there. He wasn't there when Jamie needed him the most. Jack took an oath that he would guard the children's hopes and dreams with his life. But he was unable to protect this child.
It was heartbreaking to think that Jamie would never smile again, never laugh again. He would never ask Jack for another snow-day or have another snowball fight. Jack would never hear that overly-excited voice ask if they could go sledding or ice-skating. Ice-skating... That was the last thing Jamie did. He went out onto thin ice and never made it back. It was Jack's job to make sure that the pond was frozen solid with thick ice. He was late bringing the cold and snow that would have saved a life.
Jamie never did get to see the North Pole or the Warren or Tooth Palace. Jack was going to take him there when he got older. It was almost time for Christmas and Jamie would never get to open the presents that North himself had spent hours making. Tooth would never get to show Jamie his happiest memories again. His memories going to a place where memories that are no longer needed go. Bunny would never get to watch Jamie collect Easter eggs with Sophie. He had been planning to paint some really special ones for the ankle-biter. Sandy no longer needed to bring him happy dreams about Bigfoot or having fun with Jack. Jamie was asleep, but this kind of sleep doesn't have dreams.
Jamie was going to be missed. Not only by his family and friends. But also by the Guardians that had spent countless hours with this amazing, imaginative, and sweet little boy. A light had gone out on the Globe of Belief and it had been the brightest of them all.
