It was a bright and sunny Friday for Iwatobi High School students. The lunch bell would be ringing any minute, and Rei Ryugazaki had missed the Iwatobi Swim Club meeting for that day in favor of another club he had missed a few times already. He was standing outside the classroom door talking to some of the clubs other patrons when he heard Nagisa call for him. Nagisa called Rei's name all the way down the hall until he was close enough to Rei to talk normally. "Rei, you missed practice! I missed you. Why did you skip?" Nagisa whined, pulling at Rei's sleeve. The two boys Rei had been talking to sniggered into their elbows and cast judging glances as an oblivious Nagisa. Rei flushed with embarrassment. Nagisa was again tugging at his sleeve trying to get his attention but Rei was too upset by his so-called friends to listen to anything Nagisa said. Rei turned and leaned down to Nagisa to tell him to go away just as Nagisa had got up on his tip toes to get closer to Rei's ears. Their mouths collided, Nagisa's soft lips against Rei's thin ones. The accidental kiss seemed to go on for ages. Gasps filled the hall around them while Rei's ears turned pink. He came to his senses shortly after and jerked away from Nagisa, covering his mouth and looking away in embarrassment. He snuck a glimpse at Nagisa and felt his stomach drop. Nagisa had backed away from Rei, his hands covering his mouth and tears shining in his eyes. Before Rei could say anything, Nagisa had shaken his head and turned to run back down the hall.
Rei hadn't seen Nagisa for the rest of the day, not even in their shared classes. Makoto seemed to avoid his eyes when they said goodbye before leaving in separate directions. Rei walked towards his house in silence, thinking of the kiss in the hallway. He couldn't shake the memories, the feeling of Nagisa's lips were still on his own. His mind raced and his heartbeat quickened. He sped up his pace, his feet guiding him with very little thought or effort to his front door. "Nagisa and I… we kissed. How am I supposed to act normally around him now?" Rei's mind picked up speed as he thought of all the terrible outcomes that wonderful kiss could have. He wanted to call Nagisa and try to explain that it was all an accident. "I don't even want it to be an accident." Rei's thought stopped him dead. Did he really just think that? Did he really not want their kiss to be an accident? Rei tried to shake it from his head as he approached his home. His parents were home and although he managed a feeble hello to them, he went straight to his room and flopped on his bed. Staring at his ceiling, his forgotten homework still in his bag, all he could do was think about Nagisa. His soft hair, his bright eyes, his lovably innocent façade, everything about him was just so… "No" Rei thought sternly, "Nagisa and I can't be together. Besides the way he reacted to the kiss tells me everything." He kicked off his pants, stripped his shirt off, rolled over and fell asleep, thinking about Nagisa and how awful he felt.
