"You're home late."

Halle caught her breath and then exhaled it sharply as the familiar voice reached her ears. She knew who it was but reached for the light switch anyway. He was sitting at her desk, as comfortably as if they shared the small apartment.

"You shouldn't be here," she told him.

"I took precautions." Mello peeled himself out of her chair and approached her. "I needed to see you."

"Why?"

He reached out and traced her cheekbone with his thumb. Hesitation was written all over his face; there was something like misery there, too, and another emotion that Halle couldn't place. His answer was not really an answer: "I need you to trust me."

"I thought you said that was a bad idea." He'd told her that, multiple times, dry self-loathing in his voice.

"I know what I said. But I'm telling you now that I need you to."

"I do." She always had. But right now she was starting to feel a chill creep down her back, the beginnings of a premonition. "What is this? Tell me what you're planning."

"I can't." He touched his lips to hers in a firm but brief kiss; then he pulled away and dropped his hand. The third element in his gaze was a hopeless finality.

"Mello, please…"

She didn't know whether she meant please tell me or please don't look like that or please don't do whatever you have in mind because you look like you've been sentenced to death. He only shook his head anyway. "I have to go."
