"Fox...are you really going to do this?" Slender shoulders moved as he took a deep breath, tired of the question I hadn't stopped asking since we'd formulated our little plan. "You know the answer to that." I shook my head, moving to sit next to him. He kicked his legs slowly as they dangled off the edge of the roof. One wrong move and there would be a rush of air and then...gone. No more fox. It was so easy for human bodies to die. Maybe that's what frightened him about the woman. In a way...I understood. I understood his fear of her slipping away so easily. I had the same fear for him...

I shook my head, "You'll freeze to death before you get the chance to save her." He laughed softly, looking up at the moon, tracing the aura with his fingertips.

"Hiei," he whispered, "May I tell you something?"

I nodded, slipping his fingers through mine. He leaned his head on my shoulder and laughed softly, "I'm afraid to die...I always have been." It wasn't a surprising confession considering his reincarnation. I was just surprised he admitted it out loud. "Then why go through with it?"

He looked up at me, smiling with wet eyes, "Because...I am more afraid to experience loss again."

After a thousand years...how many lives does one see slip away?

I nodded, kissing his forehead and tracing the line of his jaw with my calloused fingertips, "Maybe I'll find you again someday." He smiled and it made my heart ache. He caught my lips with his, "You will."

He was too prepared to die.
