A/N: This is for anyone who wondered why Longshot never talks.
Longshot saw the Fire Nation soldiers march through his village, shooting fire at the houses. It was chaos, people running and screaming, children crying, dog-cats whining and cat-dogs mewling. Longshot raced through the village. He ran past burning shops and smoldering remains of buildings. Finally, he reached his house; it was still untouched.
"Mom! Dad!" he called. He sprinted inside and saw a note his mother must have left him while he was practising with his bow and arrow.
We have gone to the market. We'll be back soon.
Love,
Mom
Longshot read the note quickly and took off towards the market. He could smell smoke and when he reached his destination he saw that most of the shops had been burned to the ground. He walked between the stores looking for his parents; dead or alive. After a few minutes of searching with no results, Longshot raced back to his house to check one last time. When he arrived, Fire Nation soldiers were burning a house near his.
"Mom! Dad!" he called desperately. He opened the door and found his parents inside.
"Longshot!" his mother cried. She fell to her knees and gathered him into a hug.
"We thought you had died!" she said, tears streaming down her face. Longshot's father hugged him too. They could hear the Fire Nation soldiers getting closer.
"Just remember that we love you son." His father told him softly. It was in that moment that Longshot knew they didn't expect to survive. His mom kissed the top of his head and held him close.
"I love you too Mom and Dad." Longshot said, his voice trembling, "I'm scared."
"We are too," His dad said, "but we have to try and stay alive." The Fire Nation soldiers were almost outside their door.
"Go out the backdoor. Run through the forest and don't stop until you get to the other side. Take you bow and arrows, we'll follow you in a bit." His mother said. His parents exchanged a pained glance, then they kneeled down for a final hug and kiss from their son. As he stepped into the cover of the trees, Fire Nation soldiers burnt down the front door. Longshot's parents tried to escape through the back door but Fire Nation soldiers were approaching from that side as well. Clutching each other, they were backed into a corner. The Fire Nation soldiers shot fire at the walls and floor, then left to continue their destruction of the village.
Longshot grabbed his bow and quiver of arrows from where he had deposited them and turned to the forest. Before he walked into the forest, however, he turned for one last look at his house. He saw the Fire Nation burn down his home.
"No!" he screamed, pulling out an arrow. He shot at a soldier and missed.
"No!" This time his shot killed the man.
"Mom! Dad!" he cried, sprinting to the house. He saw the roof collapse and heard his mother scream.
"Mom!" he tried to find a way to get in. The window! He pulled it open ignoring the flames.
"Mom! Dad!" he called, choking on smoke. He saw his parents on the other side of the room. They reached towards him. He watched with baited breath as his mom made her way across the floor to the window.
"Longshot I love you." She said, tears forming in her eyes.
"I love you too Mom, now come on!" he cried. He reached into the burning building and grabbed his mother's hand for an instant before the floor fell out from under her.
"Mom!" he screamed. "No! Mom! Dad do something!" His father was trapped on the other side of the room.
"Dad please, please! Don't die! You can't! No…." Longshot sobbed, but his dad shook his head sadly.
"Save yourself." Were the last words his father spoke before the burning beam came crashing down on him.
