When she's in fifth year, he's in seventh. The way it started was nothing, he reached for the coffee and so did she, and their hands met each other in a cliché way; freckled olive against molten chocolate.

(Stupid romance novels.)

A few weeks later, and Marlene thinks she's in heaven. Kingsley calls her Lee and buys her chocolates and roses.

(She loves being loved.)

In the end, she knows this is why she goes back Sirius; becuase it frightens her, the power Kingsley has. With Kingsley, it's sweet and romantic and making love.

Sirius is much different. He calls her Marley and he bruises her hips and buys her Firewhiskey. It's not so much making love as rough-and-tumble fucking, leaving them glistening with a sheen of sweat, tangles in a mass of limbs and sheets.

She is afraid of loving Kingsley, who buys her a beautiful ring and promises of a future together in a mansion with little ones running around, never mind this silly war- it can't touch them.

(They're invincible.)

With Sirius Black, it's entirely the opposite. He fucks her and they drink and smoke weed and do it again, every day of the summer holidays. There are no promises here, and she knows she can leave for Kingsley's whenever she wants to, and neither her nor Sirius will ever look back.

(But she'll take a glimpse over her shoulder and wish she hadn't acted rashly.)

But of course she stays with Sirius.

(She's too afraid of that.)

And when that green jet of light is soaring towards her chest, coming from the end of Augustus Rookwood's cherry wand, she had a split second when she wishes she would have left.

(He avenges her.)
