So...I generally do fluff, especially with Thor and Jane, but this little thing came to me yesterday and wouldn't leave me alone. I mean, NO ONE has considered *this* possibility. So...yeah...angst. Lots of angst.
Never Considered This
Jane was a scientist. She knew that there were always many possible outcomes to a situation, and she knew that one could not predict every outcome. But in all her time, she never thought she'd live through the outcome to her and Thor's relationship that she was currently living. The TV was showing the Avengers' latest battle, which had clearly been a tough one. But one of them wasn't rising from the ground where he was lying. She couldn't tell if he was breathing. Every cell in her body felt like it was screaming. She felt pain in every fiber of her being.
The camera zoomed in, and she saw that he had multiple swords going through him. It was clear from the awkward angles that he had been the driving force to them being in him. He had clearly sacrificed himself to save the other Avengers. Her heart pounded furiously in her chest as the other Avengers swarmed Thor.
Even though Thor was a warrior, Jane had never considered this. She'd never thought through the scenario that he would die before her. Their biggest obstacle, the one they didn't acknowledge much, was that she was going to die long before he was. But, here she was, watching Thor die. She watched as he fumbled with his left wrist, and he pulled something from his gauntlet. He pressed whatever it was into Steve's hands. Steve nodded at the words Thor said.
The other five Avengers just sat with him until it was clear that the life had gone out of him. The Asgardian defender was no more. Jane felt her breathing stop, felt every bit of herself freeze up. She couldn't believe this. No, no, this wasn't real. This couldn't be happening. This wasn't even in the realm of possible. Tears burned behind her eyes, and as she forced herself to take a deep breath, it came back out as a sob.
A few hours later, the Avengers returned to the Tower. They knew it had been all over the news, and they expected nothing less when they saw the tears rolling down Jane's face. Natasha was the one who gathered her into a hug, who Jane sobbed into and clung to.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. He was saving us."
"I know. I know. That's who he is. He did it for us in New Mexico. I should have realized it would be a possibility now. I mean, he did it for a town full of people that he didn't or barely even know. Why wouldn't he do it for you guys? It wasn't your fault. I'm glad you guys are okay."
"Physically, we're okay. He's gonna leave a big hole," Steve said softly.
Jane pulled away from Natasha and hugged them all. She had never been one to have a lot of friends, but the Avengers were more than friends. They were family. And they'd all lost him. So, they would get through this impossible situation together.
So, this is totally going to marked as complete, but I may or may not add more to it. So, if you guys like it, follow it, and you may get an alert at a later date. For now, I do not plan to add more, but you never know with my little faerie muse.
Please don't hate me for this, guys! I didn't want to kill Thor, either!
