PERCABETH EPISODE 1: PERCY GIFTS ANNABETH CORAL PENDANT
TIME SETTING: BETWEEN LAST OLYMPIAN AND LOST HERO, WHEN THEY RECENTLY STARTED DATING, CAMP HALF BLOOD, EVENING, BEACH & SEA
this is a short story, so no other chapters... YET :)
Percy and Annabeth sat on the beach, his arms wrapped around her as they gazed at the slowly setting sun. Annabeth leaned her head against Percy's shoulders and closed her eyes, listening to the sound of the waves. The strawberry fields and woods of Camp Half Blood were far behind them, away from the loud voices, arguments and battle training. Percy wanted to freeze this moment and live in it forever – he even wouldn't have minded if Medusa showed up and turned him and Annabeth into stone. As long as they were together.
"We should be heading back, it's nearly time for dinner." Murmured Annabeth, though secretly she never wanted to leave this spot; she would have liked to stay in his arms forever. Beside her, Percy nodded and stood up, offering his hand to help her up. Maybe he had seen the disappointment on her face, because he grinned and said,
"Before we go back, I want to show you something." His gorgeous green eyes sparkled playfully and Annabeth stood and slipped her hand into his. "What are we doing now? If you get us in trouble, I'm putting you on cleaning duty." She warned teasingly. But Percy simply said:
"Come with me."
He led her out onto the dock, the sea orange with the color of the sun and sky. Waves lapped gently against the wood as Annabeth turned to face her boyfriend. His dark hair was messy and he had that mischievous, lopsided smile on his face that once used to irritate her but over the years had become endearing. Percy gave her a gentle kiss.
"Wait here okay? I'll be back in a minute." He dived into the waves and Annabeth sat down on the wooden planks, absentmindedly combing her hair with her fingers. She let her thoughts wander, remembering when she had first met Percy. He had been asleep in the Big House, after the shock of battling the Minotaur. The first words she had said to him were something like, 'You drool when you sleep'. Oh Gods, thought Annabeth, blushing furiously. She hoped Percy didn't remember that! She snapped back to reality as he suddenly popped out of the water and pulled himself up to the dock.
"Well?" she asked, nudging his shoulder. "Why did you go down there?" Percy went pink in the face and looked down. When he looked up again, Annabeth's heart melted. His eyes glistened – he looked like a cute baby seal.
In answer, he held out his hand and said "For you."
Annabeth gasped. In his palm was a breathtaking scarlet coral pendant, which radiated a faint golden glow, its colors shimmering like a waterfall. Percy bit his lip anxiously, scanning her face. Her pale grey eyes reflected the ocean and were deep orange and her long blonde hair blew slowly in the gentle wind. Gods of Olympus, she's gorgeous, Percy thought. "So…" he said tentatively. "Do you like it?" She looked up and there were tears in her eyes and her lips stretched wide in a smile. "Percy, I love it. It's beautiful." He took the pendant and attached it to Annabeth's beaded camp necklace, where it hung in the center beside her father's ring.
"Just so that you will remember me." Percy smiled and moved a strand of Annabeth's hair from her face.
She rolled her eyes. "Seaweed Brain, I will always remember you. Just make sure you always remember me!" she threatened lightly. "How could I ever forget," he murmured, and kissed her.
They walked back to Camp, hand in hand, as the sun finally set over Long Island.
