Choices
Lucifers hair is gold, curling gently down to his shoulders. His eyes are baby-blue, his skin pale and smooth.
He says "If you aren't with us, you must be against us."
He doesn't look evil; he's tall, blond and handsome like all the other angels (and once he was an angel) and he doesn't look evil until you notice his eyes.
The eyes that are so blue and cold. The eyes that have spat in the face of God. The eyes that promise pain.
Hastur is behind him, leaning against the wall and sniggering slightly. The fist of one hand knocks gently against the maisonary, threatening, terrifying.
But not as terrifying as Lucifer's eyes.
Then Lucifer's hand grabs the front of his robes, and his head jerks sharply forward. And Lucifer is hissing into his ear "I really hope you're not against us."
Hastur levers himself upright and saunters forwards.
The angel struggles briefly, knowing it's hopeless.
"Do you want free will?"
The angel gives up the struggle.
"I...I'm with you."
Lucifer drops him looking slightly disgusted. "I don't know why I waste my time with you."
Hastur reaches down and pulls him upright. The angel (and now he is no longer an angel) whimpers slightly.
"Are you always this terrified?" Lucifer sounds bored. He was always the strongest and most perfect of angels. Beautiful and proud, there was something dangerously seductive about him. Something in him that spoke to a hidden part of everyone, to the secret mad desires that stay hidden, the voice in your head that waits until you're standing by the edge of a cliff and then whispers 'jump'.
You could almost see him as an icon. A symbol. The rebel with the greatest cause of all.
Until you saw the eyes.
"Your choice." Lucifer says to the fallen-angel. "Your decision. Free will. Can't beat it."
Then he leaves, and Hastur slams the broken angel against the wall and gives him a quick reminder of just why he's chosen to join forces with Morningstar, and why he'll never, never regret the decision.
In heaven they never noticed until much later, when his name was struck off one list and added to another.
And Crowley joined the ranks of Hell.

A/N: Yeah, this came out a bit more political than I thought. :( Written more to get a hold on Lucifer than anything else. At the moment I have too many Lucifer plot bunnies, and I should be revising or writing X-men fics.
