So hey again! I decided to write this one-shot while I still remember what I wanted to happen

In this story Jace is 14 while Alec is 16 and there might be some slight OOC-ness but anyway I hope you like it! :)

Disclaimer: I do not own Mortal Instruments!

The Institute Library was one of the favourite hang outs of Alec Lightwood. He was given a day off today and he was very glad to have some time off to catch up on things that he wanted to do like read a book about demons. Just as he was getting comfortable, he heard a loud bang

"I figured I'd find you here, it's your day off and you're spending it reading? How daring can you get?" Jace Wayland smirked at this best friend.

Alec sighed. "So much for a quiet afternoon." He glanced up. "Uh huh, so what do you want?"

"Now that's just insulting, what if I just wanted to ask how you were?"

Alec raised an eyebrow.

"Alright, fine! I'm here to offer you a once in a lifetime opportunity." Jace smiled at his friend.

"Listen Jace, that's fine and all but let's just do that some other time." Alec continued to read his book.

Jace ran up to him and grab the book away from his hands.

"Give that back, Jace!"

"No!" And he started to run.

Alec ran after him. "Jace, when I catch up to you, I'm going to kill you."

Jace shouted back "Don't you mean if you catch me." He then ran into a room and locked the door.

"Jace, open this door right now!" He started to bang on the door.

"No way! Not unless you listen to what I have to say!"

"No!"

"Fine! Then go find another book to read!"

"Why do you have to be so CHILDISH?" Alec screamed the last part extra loudly.

"I'm not the one who's screaming at the top of their lungs." He could just imagine the smirk on Jace's face.

"Okay, go, say what you have to say."

"Here's the deal, me and you are going to go to this place I found and play with the new balloons I bought and when the day is over, I'll give you back you're book."

"Balloons? Why would we need to go somewhere else to play with the new balloons?" Alec said in confusion. "You really are childish, Jace."

"Shut up! So is it a yes or a no?"

"It's not like I have a choice."

"Great!" Jace opened the door and smirked. "Meet me at the door of the Institute in 5 minutes, I need to go and get something."

"Yeah, sure."

- 5 minutes later –

Alec was sitting on the steps on the Institute waiting for his so called best friend to show up. He had a backpack with him and in it were a can of Pringles, a bag of Doritos, soda and a couple of steles, seraph blades and daggers. Just in case. He reached into his backpack and started to munch on the Doritos. "Where the hell is Jace?"

Just then the door opened to reveal Jace with... nothing.

"Good! You're here, let's go."

"Umm, where are the balloons?" Alec was extremely confused.

"I left that and all my stuff there yesterday. I was confident you'd see it my way."

"Great!" Alec groaned inwardly. "Okay, let's get this over with."

- 45 minutes later-

"Jace, where are we?"

"Quit whining, we're almost here."

A few minutes later, they arrived at their destination. He was standing on a cliff and under him was a long river. The water was pretty calm and it was surrounded by rocks.

Alec stared at the view mesmerized. "Wow! I didn't know there was even a place like this in Brooklyn."

"Jace, how did you find a place like this?" He looked beside him, Jace wasn't there. He looked behind him and his other side. Jace still wasn't there. "Shit! Did he just leave me here? I knew I should have never followed that deranged 14 year old."

"JACE!"

"Dude, I'm right here." Jace jumped down and with him was a huge backpack. "I was just getting the balloons.

Alec looked at him, bewildered. "What? How many balloons do you have in there?"

"Umm two, we are only two people you know." He said in a matter-of-fact tone.

- 10 minutes later-

"Jace! I don't think we should do this!" Alec was freaking out. Jace had just challenged him to a race and not just any race. It was an inflatable water balloon race and so here he was standing inside the said balloon.

Jace grinned at him wildly. He could tell that adrenaline was starting to seep into his system. "Stop being a baby! And live for once in your life!"

"This looks really dangerous!" Sweat was dripping from his forehead and his hands were getting really cold. He was scared as hell!

"What kind of Shadowhunter are you?"

"The kind that wants to live!" Alec shouted back.

"Don't worry! Nothing's gonna happen! Do you want your book back or not?"

"Alright, alright! Let's do this." Alec gulped. "Angels, save me!"

"Ready! 1-2-3" Jace counted down. "GO!"

Both of them pushed their inflatable balloons and they both dropped to the water. He could hear Jace shout in excitement beside him.

The impact shook Alec and his head started to hurt.

"ALEC! Hurry up!"

Jace was already ahead of him.

"Why did I agree to this?"

"Remember I have your book!"

"Right, my book but is that book even worth risking my life?"

Alec just stood there thinking when suddenly the he felt the wind blow hard behind him and he was sent flying.

"What the hell? Is this even possible!"

"Wow! Way to go Alec!"

He heard Jace cheer as he passed him. He tried to open his eyes but fear wouldn't let him. Suddenly he heard Jace shout:

"ALEC! ROCK!"

But it was too late, his balloon slammed into the rock. Lucky for him he wasn't hurt but that didn't mean he was alright. He still felt sick from all that spinning, turning or whatever you called it.

When Jace reached his best friend, he looked at him and asked:

"Are you okay?"

Alec groaned. "Yeah, I think so."

"Good! Cuz the race isn't over yet!"

Jace pushed his balloon and he was off.

"Catch me if you can, grandpa!"

Alec straightened up.

"That's it!"

And with that he was off.

He managed to catch up to Jace after a few minutes.

Jace smirked at him "Glad to see you made it."

"Yeah, yeah, I'm still gonna beat you!"

"Wow! You must have hit your head hard because you're -" Jace's face turned pale. "Shit.." He said in a low voice.

Alec turned to Jace. "What? You're giving up already." Jace didn't answer him. He just kept starring.

"What, what is it?" He looked at what Jace was looking at and he turned pale too.

"WATERFALL!" Jace was finally able to shout.

"Don't you think it's already too late for that? I thought you said this was safe!" Alec shouted back, trying to slow down the balloon but he couldn't, the water was moving too fast.

"I thought it was. I didn't know there was a waterfall!"

"What! Jace! I'm going to kill you when I make it through this!"

"Don't you mean iiiiffffffffffffffff!"

The two of them fell into the water. The impact was so strong that the balloons actually exploded and soon they were engulfed in it. Jace burst from the water and he coughed up some of the water that he managed to swallow. He looked around for Alec but he couldn't find him.

"Alec!" He kept looking. "ALEC!"

Suddenly, he saw a flash of black hair. "Alec."

Jace quickly swam towards him and pulled him out of the water to the shore. He laid him on the river bank and lightly slapped him face. That didn't work. He noticed that Alec wasn't breathing so he began to perform mouth to mouth resuscitation but that also didn't work. He tried again but he still didn't wake up.

Jace tried everything he could think off but nothing happened and after a few minutes he stopped and just sat there looking stunned. "I killed Alec" He started to cry because he didn't know what else to do. He looked at his best friend, his parabatai. "Alec" he said in a croaked voice. "I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. I shouldn't have taken your book. I shouldn't have forced you to come here. Alec, if you wake up, I promise to never bother you again. I promise to never tease you again. I also promise to never call you names. Just please, wake up Alec. Don't die on me."

No answer. Jace moved to Alec and crossed his arms on his chest. He said the Shadowhunter's final farewell. "Ave... Ave atque vale." He brushed some of the stray hair from Alec's forehead and while he was doing this, he cried harder. Some of his tears fell on Alec's face. Suddenly, he heard a sound. He looked at Alec. He saw Alec's mouth twist into a smile.

"ALEC!" Alec got up and laughed until he was crying himself, instead from laughter.

"Alec!" Jace said happily "I'm going to get you for this. He said jumping on him.

"J- ace!" Alec couldn't stop laughing. "You - you, HAHAHA!"

"Shut up!" Jace got on top of him and began hitting him with his fists.

"Wait! HAHA! Wait! Ouch! Ouch! OUCH! Okay! Stop!"

"No way! You deserve everything I'm giving you." He said hitting him hard on the chest.

Alec struggled to get him off and he finally succeeded.

"Look" Alec said seriously. "You made me panic so I made you panic. It's only fair."

Jace pouted and said. "Fine, so were even now."

"Not yet, you still have to give me my book. Then will be even."

"What if I don't want to?"

"Jace!"

"Fine, whatever, I'll give you your book when we get home."

-Walking back to the Institute-

Jace thought for a while and said to Alec who was staring at the ground.

"You know Alec, it actually isn't fair."

Alec groaned inwardly again. "Why?"

"You get two things and I only got one."

"What are you talking about! You made me do that! You said it yourself, it was your fault!"

"Yeah but still..."

Alec thought about Jace said "Okay, I'll humour you, so what do you want?"

Jace grinned. "I want another race. The first one to reach that tree wins." Jace said pointing to a tree that was about a mile or so away.

"Okay, count us down." Alec got to a running stance.

"Ready 1,2,3, GO!"

Jace was ahead and he shouted. "Ha! I'm still faster!" And then he tripped and he started to roll forward. He stopped with a thump. Alec ran up to him.

"Jace! Are you alright?"

Jace groaned. "No, I think I broke my left ankle."

"Here let me see." Alec took off his shoe. "Well, it looks more like a sprain to me but I'm not too sure. We should just let mom see it when we get home."

"Okay." Jace stood up with Alec's help and he began to limp.

"Jace, stop." Alec walked up in front of him, gave him the bags and bent down a little.

"Get on."

Jace stared at him.

"NO WAY! You said it yourself, it's only a sprain. I can walk by myself thank you. I'm not a weakling! "

"Why does he have to be so stubborn?" "Jace, Listen to me, I said "it looks more like a sprain" which means it could well be a broken ankle and if it is broken you would want to make it worse now would you?"

"Why can't we just draw a healing rune?"

"I thought about that but I decided to let you feel your stupidity for once." He smirked. "Now, get on."

Jace hopped on Alec's back and with a grunt Alec stood up and started to walk. "You know, I'm impressed, you actually know how to be somewhat evil and conniving."

Alec laughed.

"You too, Jace, you too."
