It was quite possible that Artemis would have sat like that for some time, totally detached from the situation at hand, had not the front door imploded, shaking the manor to its foundations. A thing like that is enough to knock the daydreams from anyone's head.

Artemis sat up, suddenly aware of what was going on around him. One glance at the monitors told him all he needed to know- they had sent a troll in.

A troll?

Of all creatures, a troll?

Artemis knew the fairies may not be the brightest bunch, but he did not expect them to stoop so low.

The again, in a situation like this, trolls could be highly effective. Send it in, and it kills everything in its path. Like a blue rinse, but just much more violent. A blue rinse would wipe everything out in a instance- but a troll would torture its victims, rip their limbs off- he did not want to think about it.

He stood up and rushed to the door, flinging it open. He could hear the troll roaring in the entrance hall... he knew he shouldn't get involved in the fight. Butler would have his skin for this- if they both made it of alive.

Running down the hall, headed to the sound of the commotion, Artemis cringed. Getting himself involved in the troll fight would certainly send him to his death, but he was feeling very unlike himself at the moment. He felt as if...as if he needed to help Holly. He'd messed around with her helmet, and now the wires for the halogen bulbs were loose. Light was a troll's one great weakness, and if Captain Short was going to try to distract it, that would be one of the first things she thought of.

Of course, because Artemis had messed with her helmet, now the lights weren't going to work, and she was most likely going to end up getting herself killed.

And anyway, where was Butler? What had ever happened to him and Juliet? Were they already out for the count?

Artemis reached the foyer. He skidded to a halt at the top of the grand staircase, just in time to see Captain Short head-butt the troll. He winced.

Holly was sent flying against a Norman narrative tapestry, the troll now roaring. For a split second, Artemis considered turning and running back to his study where he could sit in safety.

The troll noticed him for the first time, and roared even louder than before.

Too late.

He did not have a plan. He did not know what he was doing. He saw Captain Short watching him with one eye- then she fell unconcious. Her magic flowed through her to Butler, who was lying inches away.

The troll was charging towards him.

Was this a bad idea?

If he had stayed in his study, would there have been a chance that, somehow, the troll would have been defeated?

Probably not.

No doubt Commander Root and the rest of the fairy team were watching him at this very moment. Shaking their heads, wondering how mud men could be so stupid. So very stupid.

The troll snatched him by his head.

Seconds before his spine snapped, he thought, Mud Men aren't stupid. They're just very, very brave.

Author's Notes:

Short, yes, but decent all the same- or at least I think so. This is another one that was written for a school assignment. I rewrote the troll scene from the first Artemis Fowl book.

And yes, I realize Artemis would probably never do this. He would be more concerned for his own safety or whatever. But my teacher didn't know that. :)
